Dishon absolutely…based on his story of how he got here/injuries/et al
I would love to see some in depth looks into the amazing resurgence of the baseball and softball programs. The drastic improvement in Recruiting…philosophies of building a team/program to go to the NCAA tourney…data analytics…So much there that could be interesting…hell, the coaches are even engaged!!!
Spring football updates of course…roster, transfers, expectations, coaching updates…etc.
How NIL is affecting each of those programs and what are we doing for our own NIL purposes and what can fans/alumni do to get involved??
Could you share the typical click responses from a Chapel Hill or Duke article versus a Charlotte one? That way we can see what you mean. IE of the Chapel Hill article had 2500 clicks and Charlotte had 7 (us 5 whiners and you twice) - we get it. If you cannot share exact numbers - then relative numbers. “Article Duke got 650 times more clicks than the Charlotte article.”
Not that any comparison like that would be fair anyway. If you go click on sports today there’s multiple UNC and NCSU articles and zero Niner articles. Of course they will get more clicks.
Curious, is this a chicken and the egg scenario? I mean, if it’s not in the O then we can’t click on it. As a result, O doesn’t get clicks so no Niner coverage justified. If the preview was in the online Observer, we could click on it which may help the O justify more Niner coverage. Maybe I’m missing something?
We’re putting Niners coverage in the O. But I’m trying to be smart about it. I know the parameters. Our numbers, so far, have not been great on what we’re doing. So I don’t need to add not great on top of not great.
Depends on the story but a good bit more. Also from the company 30,000 foot view, they get Raleigh + Charlotte.
Charlotte stories don’t get many clicks in Raleigh.
There’s no reason in my mind we shouldn’t do ACC coverage level numbers in Raleigh here with Charlotte coverage. That’s why I started doing this. Just didn’t make sense to me.
Big school. Big alumni base.
The thinking had been: they won’t draw. And we do a story every now and again and it proves the theory.
To me the theory is flawed, though. You have to do it enough so people know it’s there and will continue to be there. Habits form slow.
A little gun shy to start pushing non-revenue stuff out when the major sports are ot singing — yet — but come spring, my life slows down dramatically so who knows. Maybe we’ll try a few.
Spring football I think we can hit for sure.
Threadgill? My guy. Covered him in high school. Could hit that one easy. Patterson and Jackson are interesting. How’s he been public about not making it public (love that line by the way)?
The instance I can recall is Hunter’s podcast he did with him where he said he had a big story about that that he didn’t want to talk about on that podcast because it was coming out in a story in “days”… and that was weeks ago. Check it out.
We can talk about why you all do things, I can even understand why. That doesnt in any way contradict the logical conclusion that more content, located in prominent areas, receiving consistent coverage, will get more clicks.
It’s completely unfair to compare CLT clicks to the ACC schools given the depth and history of coverage as well as prominence as it relates to real estate, both in print media and digital.
Still appreciate the effort but let’s make sure any comparisons exist on a somewhat even playing field.
LangstonW: Quick question. I know you are a big high School sports guy for the Big O. In football, Biff has made it a point to try to “bear hug” the local HS’s/programs to try to keep as much talent close to home as possible. Have you seen the same thing on the basketball side?
Langston, with so much negative and/or rather lack of coverage in the past, getting past readers to return is not going to occur overnight or with a few articles here and there. The Observer is going to have to demonstrate that they are a Charlotte paper covering Charlotte. Unfortunately, the past is not doing you any favors today. I do appreciate your efforts in at least trying.
I do too, but who wouldn’t agree that a CHARLOTTE newspaper should cover the largest university IN CHARLOTTE ? I think this illustrates the problem perfectly. The fact that the CO even thinks this is a legitimate question that they need to think about.
