I’ve got a question/Charlotte Observer

Biff has done a great job reaching out to the power programs. The middle and lower tier coaches feel ignored. Some tell me there is still a feeling that Charlotte thinks they can get elite kids looking at ACC/SEC etc and ignores others. Just reporting what they say

Basketball coaches haven’t had the best relationship with Charlotte since Major. I’m betting Fearne turns that around

I’ve heard that a lot here.

I don’t think it’s a question. It’s about a return for corporate. We have to show return.

My effort in fall didn’t and my effort right now isn’t.

Want to do more but more folks gonna have to play ball. I can’t make you and can’t change the past.

Interesting, so is Biff trying to leverage the area for recruitment? Doesn’t that kinda put our program in revolving door jeopardy? Like good kids coke here because they want to make it to ACC and SEC, then get swooped up by those conferences if they’re good enough?

Have the middle and lower tier coaches that feel ignored expressed that outwardly, or is that just conjecture?

What did Major do that turned off all the local high schools? I’m a 2023 alum and current grad student, so I’m not the most well versed on the specifics of history of this university and the city.

Many of us that do follow Langston are retweeting to our followers so it’s going beyond just his reach.

I am the one that asked because you REPEATEDLY state that “the clicks aren’t there” but it is crystal clear the clicks ARE there for the ACC schools. I am an engineer. I think in cause and effect. You dangle out the carrot. I want to quantify that carrot. I think it is fair question.

And many of these hs coaches think little ol Charlotte should take their scrub kids nobody else wants.

Coaches have told me those things, no conjecture. Biff the feeling is he’s doing a solid job, but more with the elite programs. And coaches tell me that Charlotte often targets the Drake Maye types, swinging for the fences. Their thinking is go after those kids, but don’t ignore the ones we think can play at your level.

This is them talking, not me.

Coaches said Major had a good relationship but it hasn’t been as strong since he left. Fearne is new. So we’ll see.

Please RT and follow.

Charlotte coverage doesn’t get very many clicks.

ACC coverage gets a lot of clicks and subscriptions.

If Charlotte didn’t get clicks but did subs, that would be fine, too.

Right now, not getting either one.

I’m trying to do what y’all ask: make coverage consistent, solid. Not a one and done.

We’ll see what happens.

I’m not really dangling a carrot. I’m just being honest.

If Charlotte coverage gets clicks/subs, there will be more of it.

No I think coaches have players that in some cases turned out to be dudes that, pre-Biff, Charlotte wouldn’t look at. Won’t names but there are a few that do come to mind.

I think a lot of kids want to get away from home and go to the biggest school they can go to. folks offering 3K/mo and a free leased car, too. But there’s lots of talent in this area.

Even if you dont get Tier 1. The next tier is really, really good.

I get that even the news is a business and in order to publish, revenue needs to be there.

However, imagine if a newspaper would focus on journalism and cover their local area as their first priority. #pipedream

That formula works…and it works for most every other publication in every other city that has a major D1 school.

But this case is different. Said publication has been alienating and pissing off that target audience here for so long…it may be damaged beyond repair at this point.

Sad but true.

Yeah----thats the problem. They think we are at some “lower level”.

Please share the details of how you KNOW that ACC coverage results in subscriptions. This just sounds more like “we just KNOW this is true”, without any actual metrics to prove the correlation.

Harry, Major was the only coach since Lutz that embraced the Charlotte area. Wasn’t a great coach but recruited this area greatly. Woods, Dorn, Lester, Izunda.

He got better talent here than anybody other than Lutz.

I think that’s what LW was saying

The observer is a regional newspaper and nothing more and they cannot accept accept that fact. No one reads the observer for anything else. There are too many other sources of news. Their egos are driving them to bankruptcy.

We do that. We were covering Charlotte with a beat writer and the corporate folks saw the numbers weren’t great. That’s the business part.

I think coverage can turn the numbers. Or I thought.

Not the plan to tick anyone off. The fact that reporters/editors came on and here and dialogue happened…is that a large percentage of the hard feelings?

Who is they?
