I see the numbers. Every day.
Yep, facts.
We are absolutely a regional newspaper. Not sure I get your point.
Guys I’m trying to figure out ways to cover charlotte more and all i read about on here is how The Observer hates Charlotte and won’t cover Charlotte.
I do work for The Observer, and neither of those things is true of me or anyone there currently
They would come on here or local radio and “stir the pot”…specifically because we complained about coverage. We wanted to be treated like the home town team by the home town paper and many representatives of the Big O used that as an opportunity just to make fun of us and LITERALLY told us to “know our role.”
So our complaints were not only never seriously addressed…we were taunted, belittled and talked down to for expressing our disappointment.
Not a way to win customers…but they loudly and literally never cared. The hubris…and the dismissive “know your role” attitude towards “little ol uncc” was a constant from anyone that came on this boatd from the Big O.
Noone ever came on here to reach out to us like you have…they came here to basically tease us and humiliate us for daring to ask for more/fair coverage.
All of them.
Sorry to hear that. All I can say is that 1. I didn’t know. 2. Those folk are not here. 3. Those times are past.
And please judge me by my actions and not my words.
Righhht…so people buy a,subscription and say, im getting this because i love your ACC coverage…sure.
Ok…will do. How many Charlotte football games have you attended (actions) in our 11 year existence?
Oh trust me…you are not included in that group as far as I’m concerned. If Persinger, Poole, et al would have come on here with the attitude that you have…none of this would be an issue at this point.
You have certainly been sincere in wanting to help the relationship and the coverage…no doubt.
Again…I’m just afraid that so much damage has been done…not sure it can be salvaged. But it’s certainly got nothing to do with you.
Needed you here in 2000.
And @LangstonW …here’s an example…one of the ones I will never forget.
David Poole was on Primetime with the Pacman and it was in our hey day…Pacman was taking a lot of callers talking about our season, the CUSA Tourney (back then…ESPN called it The Lutz Invitational) and the NCAA Tourney…our callers almost monopolizing the entire college basketball segment.
Poole (tired af hearing talk about us and not his beloved Heels) just interjects at one question at one point and says “I don’t know what the question even means…there is no Charlotte school. I know there’s a UNC Charlotte close by…but I have no idea what you’re talking about with this Charlotte nonsense.”
He continued this over and over the entire segment. Instead of actually contributing and talking serious basketball with serious fans about their serious program…he just took that shot over and over and over the entire time.
Even though…there is also no school named Carolina or North Carolina either …it’s UNC Chapel Hill. He doesn’t mention that or attack UNC fans in the same manner. Only us little ol UNCC fans.
He continued to do that every time he was on that show ad nauseum just to f@#$ with us.
Again…not even an attempt to take us seriously…just try to belittle us and make fun of us.
Persinger was the same way on here…VERY much “Know your role” and we can’t prioritize your little ol school when we have to cover the ACC. No real conversations…no discussion about solutions or anything. Just a dismissive laugh it off mentality that we were ridiculous to even ask for coverage when we were not an ACC school.
That kinda stuff you don’t just forget about.
It’s amusing the the institution that David Poole represented is now as irrelevant as he once claimed we were.
Can someone drum up CLT’s post about David Poole. Maybe the greatest post in NN.N history.
I’d like to see of Over49er and Persingers spats too. They had a legit dislike for each other, lol
The exact point of my post. Corporate is worried about money first. Imagine if that could be put aside and the Chronicle focused on journalism and local stories first. You wouldn’t have had to come on here to try to win the fandom back and ‘beg’ (not that you are begging) for clicks.
Others have said it, and I will echo it, I appreciate you coming here. I appreciate you posting the links (I click them). However, corporate isn’t looking at the business like you. If you are going to compare Charlotte clicks to ACC clicks, corporate isn’t going to change.
Well, he is dead, too.
Why was Poole even talking about college basketball? Wasn’t he a Nascar guy?
Funny he should have been concerned with nomenclature, since he covered a sport which refers to cars as “the 3”
Wonder if Ohio State refers to their players that way.
“Good defense by the 12”
I knew I could count on you to finish the analogy. ![]()
I think the people continuing to attack are just big losers and have no etiquette.
I love the stuff you’ve been doing thus far. I actually subscribed to the Observer a couple years ago because I was looking for 49ers coverage. I’d seen a little and noticed yall had a dedicated section to them on the website. It’s definitely been more lackluster than I anticipated, but I was very happy about the love for the football team last semester.
I’m saying all this because I want to make it aware that you did pick up at least one subscriber based on 49er coverage. I read the e-edition, which I recognize doesn’t help with clicks, but you’re getting my money either way.
My sister’s alma mater is Queens, and now that they’re D1, I’d hope some love would be sent their way too.
I know the two of us agree on that the local schools should be covered in the local paper. But I want to emphasize that if yall don’t, then nobody will. You guys are kind of the only hope for any substantial news pieces on any of the local school teams beyond the self-written game wrap-ups that the schools put out themselves.
It’s nice to get to know the coaches and players in a more in-depth light. It adds some emotion and meaning to the games I’d argue.
I’d actually suggest that the write-ups for the games be kind of short and more focus and time should be spent on player profiles. I remember when the Bengals went to the Super Bowl a couple years back, yall did a really awesome write-up of Ogunjobi. That was really cool and totally unnecessary haha.
You all may be able to connect with Niner Diamond Report for help with some baseball and softball articles. It may not get the clicks that you want, but I’d imagine they have so much knowledge in their heads that it’d be cheaper for time to pay them to write something in the paper, similar to Hunter.
Now’s the time for The Charlotte Observer to prove itself and help build a following.
Charlotte plays in the #1 vs #2 game in the American Conference this weekend. Good headlines and article placement should draw interest. It will also help promote the game.
This could be big for the CO, 49ers, and city of Charlotte. The Observer has the influence to help promote.
clt asks if anyone else remembers the observer ads over the tunnels in haltron?
I remember the specials they extended to students. My on campus room always received a daily copy of the Charlotte Observer. I continued my subscription long after graduation.
My daily reading seems to have faded as the University of Charlotte coverage declined. Now that I reflect, I really miss it.
I’m appreciative of Langston’s efforts.
