i’d be more than happy to join in, and i can think of about 10 others off the top of my head that will come too.
Let me go and speak with her tomorrow and let her know the deal. Im sure she would be receptive to hearing our thoughts. Like i said, we can go anywhere from the Deans assistant(my fiance) all the way up to her…and see what we can get changed!
My fiance helps head some of the SOAR dept…Ill get on that. I know the whole staff…they are always open for new ideas for school spirit. Give me some ideas of what you think they could do. Realistically speaking from a financial standpoint and a PR standpoint and Ill be sure to have a sit down with the head lady.
Just explain to them that Chapel Hill is 2.5 hrs away. If they want to go there, I’m sure they can find an application online. This is Charlotte and our school colors are green and white (and unofficially gold).
Seriously, I’m thinking that some folks could make a “49er Pride” video that features Bobby Lutz, other coaches, some of our players and alumni explaining the importance of school pride. Show the video to all students at SOAR. Or maybe just show them the video of Dick Spangler like metro suggests.

We are going to have to find a way to speak to these incoming students in a way to not piss them off from the beginning…The SOAR department will not go for that. Unfortunatly…most of these kids have pulled for other teams for the better part of their life…bc it was the cool thing to do. Now its time to make them realize the pride that can be felt when you step onto a campus that is YOUR OWN…and you can really relate with…in every aspect.
Whether you are pissed about something on campus…or a sporting event…or you are at a game cheering your head off…waiting after games just to get a chance to speak with players or coaches. Those are things that they can actually have a hand in…and make a difference in a place that they can call their own. Rather than watch some other team from a far that no matter how much they say yay or ney…their voice isnt going to be heard.
Take the pride in your school that you…and IT deserves!
However…the second part of your suggestion seems very feasible. I would love to set something like that up…keep shooting the ideas. Im going over to the Dean’s office around 2 this afternoon.
Guys, just realize it’s easier to cheer for a winner than a loser school like ours.

This is exactly what we need.
The vast majority of Charlotte students have NO FREAKING IDEA about the glory days. The sold-out Cincy games, the upsets, the mass camp-outs, the thousands of students jumping up and down. They simply don’t know. How are we gonna hate on them if they don’t even know? The answer is to educate them, by getting all of this onto a single video, and showing it to every freshman during SOAR/freshman orientation or whatever.
Sort of like the video they show at basketball games (“RIGHT HERE…RIGHT NOW…”), but a little longer with a few more details.
It’s really that simple. They don’t know. They’ve grown up watching tv and on tv you see the ACC, not the Niners, and so that’s what they know. Period. How are we gonna blame them for that?
The question is whether we’re gonna educate them or not. The 49er pride/history video presentation is perfect, and if people are angry about our students wearing Tar Hole gear, you need to step it up and make this happen.
Our 22,000 student body should be freaking ashamed of themselves. We were the away fans tonight and it wasn't even close.
I don’t know what game you were at. No freakin’ way were there more Tar Heel fans there than Niner fans!

Educating new students about the glory days is a nice idea. Giving them a similar experience of their own, though, is the only way to win their hearts.

You’re 100% right. Excellent point.
But it is a two-part strategy, and we only have control over the first part. And so we have an obligation to do the education part as much as possible.
Then we’ll cross our fingers.

HOLY ****… I agree with Mike!
Remind me to buy you a beer for that one if we ever meet.

correct. but continue reading.
the glory days of having our wins over a top 10 team appear on page 14 of the observer? the glory days of no pre-game article of a nationally televised matchup against a top 5 team when you instead had front page coverage of televised acc battle between the 2 teams in last place? give us a ****ing break. our coverage gets worse when we win and better when we lose.

We need to grow up. Even Cousin Pookie knows the Observer has given our fair share of coverage in the paper this past basketball season. And we didn’t even make the NCAA tournament. For heavens sake. Let’s have a good season (which we haven’t had for years now) and then complain about local newspaper coverage.

I need to get your urban legends addressed on snopes.com. If you can find a win over a Top 5 game that we put on page 14, I’ll buy you dinner.
Job knows this kid that I am talkin about, we attended high school with him
“Yeah I hope its packed and the weather holds off so we can play I think it will be a good game. We had a little speech after the last game we played yhall.”
Goes 2 for 3 and 2 RBI’s in the game and afterwards I return to my dorm room from a shower after the game and get a text that says,
“WOw great game tonight. I thought you guys were gonna have alot of Charlotte fans there. Hope to play down here again next year!”
What the heck do you say back to that…they kicked out butts from the beginning till the end…I just told him congrats and I would be down there to watch him play sometime soon. Wow what to say other than…Let’s F up the Spartans tonight like the Tarheels F’ed us up last night

The fact some call that time period “glory days” is a little disheartening in itself.
dad to son: what do you want to be when you grow up?
son’s reply: i want to grow up and be an asshole and pull for the tarheels
The fact some call that time period “glory days” is a little disheartening in itself.
good point va. but that’s as close to glory days most of remember. i was not around for the teams of the 70s.

It’s interesting that back then we complained about sucking because we couldn’t get past the second round and now that same time period is our “glory time”. Funny how time has a way of warping our views.
All of the A&T, Savannah St., Winston-Salem St., South Carolina, Kentucky, etc. grads pretty much like us, & want football for us at work. I say a businessman is easier to convert, & I’d rather have their support, than a student who roots against us. F— the Benedict Arnolds!
