being of “reasonable age”, i no longer wish my life away…but i can hardly wait for november (not midnight madness!) when all this speculation abt briscoe, johnson, green, braswell, etcetcetcetcetcetcetc is no longer speculation.
i do think we have an exceptionally good bunch coming in with some potential studs staying on, and i think we’ll be able to kick some serious a**. but, hey…it’s june. only…
time for flip-flops and pop-tops.
it will be what it’s going to be.

Powerbait did you not know that Briscoe made the college insider.com mid major freshman all-american team? check the website. Briscoe was also named 1st Team Black College All-American check NCCU website.
Now do you believe?
This kid is a STUD

Jamar, welcome to the board (and to Charlotte). Your posts have convinced me you are a stud! I look forward to seeing you fill it up 2010!

WINNER!
I was thinking the same thing… only I know well enough not to say it on here…

His playing time saw increases too. I still don’t think he has done substantially enough to say he has developed. He still lacks any reliable post moves.
I’m not saying we do not have good players, but the amount of players who develop more facets to their game doesn’t happen often, or enough.[/QUOTE]
His production increased at a greater rate than his PT. Even ignoring stats, just watching him play you can see he was a much better player. He was better at everything. Is he a complete post player? No, not even close. But we’re talking about development here, and Phil made a huge jump from his first year to his second, if he continues to progress at the same rate he will be a very dangerous player for us the next two seasons.

His production did increase by more, but he was also forced into a more primary load without Leemire or another being 65% of the offense.
I still haven’t seen the development in his skills. He has a nice stroke but it is rarely utilized. He lacks any definitive post moves, still runs into foul trouble, and is hit and miss defensively (he does well against Varnado, but sub-par against smaller lesser players). I didn’t see a player out there that was MUCH better, I saw one who was better, but that was largely due to exposure, and doing more on a lesser team.
I think he has many tools to be very good, and I know big guys can take some time, but generally you see progression, or consistency in play. Last year, the guy was a total question mark in regards to production every game. You had no idea what you would get with him (along with 1/2 the team).
I do think he’ll be better out there with Spears, someone who can possibly fire him up (which I think is part of his issue), and he’ll provide a wide enough body to aid in blocking out down low, something Coley struggled with.

The last few weeks I was on campus this spring, I noticed Spears and Jones both slimmed down a lot, so I think Spears has fired Jones up.
I am not doubting that those publications honored him as such, and I am glad we have a guy like that here playing for Lutz. Especially considering he is paying his own way a year. But, all-american has certain implications and I don't think we should be advertising him as an all-american until he is honored by the AP.
Good Point, however there are other reputable publications in addition to the AP that qualify collegiate All-American status as well as top 25 and high school all-americans. It would be doing a disservice to any athlete or team not to recognize those who have achieved such a distinquished award based on the merit of one sporting service. Another ex. would be the case in which you have the AP PLAYER OF THE YEAR, THE NAISMITH PLAYER OF THE YEAR, THE NABC PLAYER OF THE YEAR etc.
Also in the case of Briscoe because NCCU is not a full fledge member of the NCAA until their reclassification period is up the AP would not even consider him. That certainly doesnt mean he was not worthy of All American status as evidenced by his numbers and the other publications that voted him to their All-American teams.

Well let’s hope you are right on this one and he is named an all-american in the 2010-2011 season.

I don’t disagree with your points on his play, but just watching him he was obviously much more comfortable out there last year than he was his first year.
I do disagree with the point on simply getting more exposure. That’s a valid argument if he had shot the same percentage and simply took more shots last year. He didn’t, he shot a much better percentage indicating he both took better shots and got himself better looks, he did something much better to increase his shooting percentage by 15%.
He wasn’t consistent and needs to work on creating his shot, in other words, he is like 90% of the second-year college players in the country. He was clearly a better player last year even if he lackes refinement, but he has also only played 2 years of D1 ball, it’s a little early to declare his development as a success or failure.

You’re right, I never said he was a success or failure, just that I have yet to see the development, I would suspect and/or like to see.
.......just that I have yet to see the developmentAre we all talking about the same Phil?
Jones has gotten better, but his posts moves are still weak. I’ve yet to see him dominate anyone.
there was some sort of ‘disconnect’ about right after 'sokool’s post i think. who are we talking about?
I think it is a little disingenuous to call this kid an all-american. I think he is a great fit for our program and he is probably going to be a special player. I can see a guy like this blowing up at Charlotte, especially if we have a legit PG so he can slide to his more natural 2 guard position.I think Phil Jones is a really solid low post presence. I think if he has two more years he can become a really good low post presence. Not many teams have that size.
Do you mean Briscoe at the 2G? We’d need to have a pretty good-sized pg to make up for the size issues on D. I think he plays pg all the way.
I agree with you on Jones. He is on the cusp. With his size and shooting touch, he could be a nightmare for opposing post players, if we had some complementary production.
Not developing players arguments?..Deja vu. Tyler Hansbrough and Greg Paulus.

I believe Briscoe is a big get- talented, scoring combo guard with an attitude could be really good for us.

If you guys are banking on Jones being a huge contributor, I think you are setting yourselves up to be disappointed. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m usually not.
I don’t expect him to be an all star for us. I expect him to shore up the middle, get garbage points and get rebounds. A 9 pt, 7 reb, 2 block average would be nice out of the middle.

I agree. I wonder what the average stat line for our centers has been over the last 10 years.

I hope you mean his Sr. year if he gains that eligibility. I don’t see that this year.

I think both of those guys developed some, but not enough for as much air time as they get. I think that shows with Paulus turning to football. Hansbrough started to develop a jumper, but it never became a dependable weapon for him. His shooting from the hip, get the foul call, was his bread in butter. He didn’t have much more, other than that he excelled at cleaning up on the glass, and from having other good players around him to feed him the ball off penetration. He also has pretty good hands.
