Q: I was surprised to see Dave Telep giving Javarris Barnett such high acclaim. Have you seen him play, what is your take on him? I know their games are different, but how you would compare him to last years in-city recruit, Charles Dewhurst in terms of overall talent? Do you think Barnett will be an immediate impact player or will it take a year or two for him to develop into a D1 player?

A: I have seen JB several times this season and last. I always thought he had potential. Heās playing to it now. Dewhurst and Barnett are different. Dew is more of a natural inside player with good driving skills. Barnett is a pure shooter, Reggie Miller/Ray Allen style.
Javarris has come so far so fast, but I think he has so much more room to grow, even more than Dew. I can see Javarris being a conference star for UNCC. If he really really really learns to handle the basketball, and get to the rim, heās gonna be special. And he has MIDRANGE game. Love to see that.

I was there just a little into the first period and left with about 3 minutes to go when the coach took Barnett out. (May have put him back in after that) From what I saw he started out slow going 1-3 from three but when I left he was 4-7 from the field and 3-6 from three. From the above post he must have picked up another two when I was not there. My over all impression is that he has a nice stroke but not the quick shot that Jobey had. He also does not run off screens he is more of a spot up shooter. The guy guarding him was about five feet ten so I guess spotting up is ok with that type of defender. Donāt expect much rebounding from him. No Basden in that department. Decent defence but the team they were playing was out classed. Only saw hiw handle the ball for a few brief periods but seemed to have good skills. Seemed to lack intensity but his team was way up the whole game. Not overly athletic but didnāt need to be in this game. Needs improvment: rebounding,moving without the ball,leadership(didnāt see him say a word on the floor and he is a senior) and could use a little more range on his three. Overall a good player with alot of upside. PS if you read this post send me a dollar,I need to recoup the four freaking dollars they are now charging to get into a high school basketball game.

I was there too. Nice breakdown lake49er. I agree with just about all of it. His team is pretty well rounded so I think that too can explain his lower numbers lately. I think the pros are his size, a good release, plays composed, pretty good passer, 1400 on SAT and hasnāt played top level basketball. The cons are not a great athlete, quickness, taking a player off the dribble and hasnāt played top level basketball. If heās playing the 2 or 3 Iām not too worried about his rebounding. I noticed the same thing as lake49er about his intensity. Reminded me of Curtis Withers in high school. Heās just not a leader or vocal I guess. But I would have liked to have seen a little more hussle. I donāt know if heāll be as good as Jobey. But I do think heās a good land for us. I would compare him to Shanderick Downs.

If he does turn out to be as good as Downs then good pickup.

Hope Christian game should be good. They are loaded with talent. Kenny Gabriel (a guy were are recruiting), Laron Dendy (one of the best players in the state, Clemson), JT Thompson (who we recruited, VA Tech), and a couple other kids.[/QUOTE]
VC beat somebody by about 40 and play today in the semis at Carolina Day school (no box score in the Observer). Not sure where that is. The western finals will be in Asheville this weekend. Carolina Day could be in Asheville now that I think about it.
Victory Christian recently played in and won the National
Association of Christian Athletes Tourney in Dayton, Tn. In 3
games Javarris Barnett scored 6,8 and 5 points. Not exactly
lighting it up, is he? He looks more and more like a project but
I still believe signing him was good. Coach Chris Cheeks told me
they think Javarris may grow another couple of inches.
In those same 3 games, Victory junior
point guard Andre Cornelius scored 18,19 and 29. I hope
we are recruting this little guy hard.

Lets hope so because if he can only score an average of 8 points in the State Finals and Natl. Championship games for āChristain schoolsā and is 6ā5" with a pure shot I would be really concerned. Was he not suppose to be a ābig gameā player?
ā¦our man Barnett scored only 6 in this game yesterday? Anyone know the scoop on this game? Maybe he shut down the Veritas main threat and scored the last 6 points of the game to win? If not, I hope he learns to score by next year.
I think this guy had one huge tourney during Christmas and recieved a big-time scholarship for being in the zone at the right time. I do not expect much from this kid until at least his JR year if then. This is a big-time gamble!
