Wow!! So I assume North Texas has a hefty buyout clause to pay?? Wonder if she told Judy she was outta here the minute a Texas job opened up?
Could be. But if someone willfully circumvents the language of their contract (resigning in order to eliminate the buyout) - that’s grounds to taking a case to an arbiter.
Then what? Judy looks like a total ass for fighting someone whose reasons for departure are based on family. After all, the AD masks their small time commitment by cultivating this phony baloney image of one big happy family with Judy at the head of this idyllic Norman Rockwell thanksgiving day table.
Well played, Karen. Well played.
Coach Aston is not that devious. She was holding out volunteering that she was going to North Texas because they want to wait to announce her hire at their basketball banquet on Monday. To be as fair as possible to us, she didn’t delay her resignation until NT announced. Just that simple.

Then riddle me this. Did North Texas ask permission to speak with Coach Aston since that is basic protocol in Coaching searches? If they did ask permission then why is Judy shocked and saddened by all of this?
Something does not add up in all of this from the sound bites released but since the overall theme is who cares about women’s BB I will move on. We have an interesting Ath. Dept.
They asked permission. The shocked and saddened part is that she actually left. Pretty simple reasoning if you aren’t always looking through a conspiracy lens.
Maybe if we had a Chancellor with the balls to tell CMS, IF we had got the WNIT Final 4 at home, the Science Fair has to move, not the B-Ball Game to Bo, Karen would have stayed. I’m pretty sure if it had been the guy’s NIT Final 4, & we had a shot at hosting CMS would have been told to F8ck themselves by DuBois if they thought the men were going to Bo Arena. :-*
The more I think about the more pissed I am at Aston for how she left. I would have had no issues is with her leaving to take a better job or job closer to home. But to suddenly resign claiming distance from family as an issue and THEN be in talks for a job seems disrespectful.
If she was unhappy, ready to move on etc etc etc, she could have gone through the process just like so many coaches every spring and taken the job, but for some reason this just rubs me the wrong way.
North Texas better have their checkbook ready tomorrow when they make this announcement because Judy is going to want that payment ASAP!

The deal with North Texas was done before she ever returned from the Women’s Final Four. They asked her not to reveal it until today and she complied with their wish. There really are family issues involved. Maybe she was a little unhappy here, but I think most of that was just being away from the Southwest, where she lived her entire life until we hired her. Do you think it might be a little difficult to go from a winning team in the A10 to a horrible team in the Sun Belt? I selfishly wish she were still here, but I can’t hate on her for going back near home. BTW, I know the deal was done at the Final Four from a VERY short grapevine and because she told her players she was going to North Texas middle of last week.

I must have missed that tidbit. That still doesn’t make me feel better about the end result.
Aston helped recruit Jalie Mitchell and Rosalyn Reades, who led UNT to the WNIT in 2001 and 2002. Both players were later inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.
I think this sums up expectations pretty well. I am certainly proud of what our women accomplished this year, but our goal is the NCAA tournament. The WNIT gets you a watch or a ring here, but the only thing that should happen to your jersey is it gets washed.
Scollie has a point. At 1st I was all into the family, but hell take a year off or something before going to another job if you’re family is sick. Yes North Texas is closer to her parents, but it’s still a couple of hundred miles away. She’s not going to be running over there every night.

Just getting older and starting on the decline we all face sooner or later. What would you do? The opening at North Texas is now, not at some undisclosed future time when Karen may want to contemplate taking time off. She may be pretty far from Benton, Ark, but she’s a hell of a lot closer than she would be here. She could, for instance, go home for a day or two much more easily than from here. Would you want to spend time with your mother while she still is alive? I hope so.
Aston’s base salary was $150,000 with some incentive opportunities. The $100,000 buyout was mentioned by David Scott in his blog, so I assume it is accurate.
