Hopkins is growing on me more and more. In fact I’d say it’s even between him and Kelsey with me now.
My only concern with Hopkins (other than how long would he be here) is that he plays the good cop while Boheim plays the bad cop for Syracuse. It is difficult to be the good cop and bad cop as head coach.
anything Carmelo Anthony says is “good” is really bad
Would not put much faith into what he says
This is our guy, I gotta believe. Would make a major impact. He’s one of the most respected around. Just look at his guys at Syracuse. Carmelo and others would be on board.

The guy would be a huge get for us. And I for one I’m very excited that Judy is willing to go for someone like this and not just settle for what others think we “deserve.”
If we’re fortunate enough to get him it’s clear it will only be for a few years, assuming we enjoy the success a guy like this could bring. I’m ok with that.

Probably the most satisfying aspect of this whole process has been that our AD has defied what is conventional thought around here.
Couldn’t buy out bobby, did.
Would go after a rinky dink retread, didn’t.
I honestly think some people here expected us to handle our job search like UNCW has, but I have always thought Judy does a pretty good job. I am confident we are going to seal the deal with what appears to be a quality candidate. We all know that hiring is a crapshot.

Yeah anything a NCAA Champion, NBA All-Star, and US Olympic gold medalist player says is good about a basketball coach is probably not any good.
Norm listed 5 teams as a #1 Seed on page 3. :))
The AD at Cuse already reneged when the promise hit Espn a couple of years ago. If you were Hopkins would you trust him? That might work in our favor. If I were Hopkins, I’d try to get a signed deal as HCIW to stay.
Of course in the not coming category, his wife’s whole family is there, she grew up there, she is a grad like him, & she has a big wig job. Is DuBois willing to give an Academic big wig job to a B-Ball HC’s Wife, because I’m sure this is a package deal type situation?
Yeah, I used to criticize Judy a lot before FB, but I have laid off. I was a bit nervous at 1st, but Hopkins, & maybe Kelsey, has me believing in her abilities, & re-thinking wanting her to retire. If she can pull this off, I’ll have total confidence she can get the right FB Coach. And I think Hop or Kel can get at least 2nd Rd., probably Sweet 16, & a good chance of more. Hop seems to have the magic touch with understanding today’s athlete.

actually Phil called Judy per their press conf, and said he wanted to meet with her about Lutz the night of the NIT show, and he pulled that plug- not sure why you dap here there on buying him out…
I don’t think UNCW should be the par to beat LOL…
as for her doing a good job the last 19 yrs, I can’t say I agree there. Some facilities I will credit her on, but this region is no more familiar with our program than when she took over, and her image is not what a CEO should be. In fact, when I see her speak on tv I cringe, especially with all that data in my head over two decades. Good person? Yes. Good manager? No way. If we had any sort of TV, radio, legit marketing, etc then I might be on board.
that said, it appears this search has gone well, but she is not sailing this ship alone, and we don’t have anyone signed yet. Lets see who comes on board and what CHP is willing to pay.

She has an outstanding record for coaching hires in most programs (men’s & women’s basketball, baseball, golf, men’s & women’s soccer). A number of them have gone on to bigger schools and conferences. In my opinion, hiring coaches is one of her strong suits.

She has has to hire for the mens basketball job three times. The 1st time she F’d it up, hired the right guy but the manner in which it was done had us looking again just a couple of years later. Her second attempt got the right guy. She is .500 right now, hit a HR with this hire and the reord looks strong. But as been pointed out, hiring for $100K jobs is different. This hire and the football hire will tell me alot.

She has done an excellent job of hiring good coaches in all sports and it is one of her strong suits. Let’s hope she keeps up the good work.
If they let Mullins stay the AD, things would be a LOT different by now. He was an excellent business man, moderator and salesman. Judy has helped the university grow but some of that is due to the general growth the city has had. It wasn’t just Judy there. They were short sighted then and hopefully will learn from their mistakes. The jury is still out.
I don’t think you can count Wat as an L. The year before he was hired the team had a losing record. Then we had back-to-back NCAA 2nd rounds. That’s about the best we could ask for. Judy can’t help it that someone with more money came in and scooped him up.
But as has been argued in other threads, would you rather hire a guy who sucks and won’t have the interest of people with more money in a few years because he’s not good, OR would you rather get coaches who can get us far but then leave for a big payday (the way Xavier does it)?
Based on all the pub, if we land Hopkins or Kelsey I figure they would be introduced by Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest.

The current head coach shows no plans to step down anytime soon. Do you risk being a 20 year asst coach with No HC experience, bank on taking over Cuse and living the good life? BUT what if you fail at Cuse? You are a 20 yr asst coach with 3 yrs failed HC expernece at BCS school and suddenly join the ranks of the ‘retreads.’
If you honestly believe there are no guarantees in life, you take a good HC job and wait. Believe me, if SU loves him so much, they will know how to get in contact with him in Charlotte.
There are MANY Syracuse fans that want Hopkins to be the head coach there right now. He isnt “banking” on being the next head coach he will be the next head coach @ syracuse.
I wouldn’t say MANY. Boeheim will coach at Syracuse as long as he wants to, as long as they don’t fall off the map and just stop making the tournament each year.
lol ok well i am from Syracuse and grew up a Syracuse fan (still am) and i can tell you that there are a significant amount of ppl that want boeheim out. One championship in 34 years of coaching the team and melo was the reason they even won that title…with the type of talent that has gone through the program there’s no excuse for one nat’l championship in 34 years. People are ready for change just go to a Syracuse board and you will see that…
You are around the disgruntled fans though. Good thing the AD isn’t run by these disgruntled fans, or Syracuse would be a joke. Back to my point, the fans who want Boeheim out are still very much in the minority.

OMG how ignorant
you have any idea how long the list is of big time asst coaches who became HC and failed?
Bobby has 200+ career D1 wins. Thats 18 per year. Certainly not coach K, but not too shabby considering where he coached.
the list of qualities needed to HC at this level is long: x/o, recruit, raise money, engage community, keep kids out of trouble, make team get grades, win, manage staff, etc…HC is much different than AC.

Judy and the Athletic Department have done a good job with their short list of very qualified candidates. I think you’ll be hard pressed to find many people that would rather have Lutzball than Kelsey, Hopkins, or Dooley.
Anyone can fail. That is not a good reason to accept the past 5 years.
