NCAA Investigation of UNC-CH

The University of North Carolina’s football program received the Notice of Allegations from the NCAA on Tuesday.

A certain head FB coach, with a certain 919 area code, has yet to releast his cell records. Hmmmm…

And his unreleased 216 area code cell had ties to John Blake. Hmmmm…

For all the tawdry scandals that have tarnished college football over the past 12 months -- from USC to Tennessee, from Cam Newton to Jim Tressel -- one can easily argue that the nine major violations levied against Butch Davis' program Tuesday contain more filth and more blatant disregard for the rule book than any of them.

I’m amazed LOIC wasn’t included. I don’t know what else LOIC could look like.

Former player wrote in today bitching about the Observer bringing up parking tickets. :))

SCK, links are helpful for everyone.

Gotta love it when someone complains about the Observer showing the Holes in a bad light. It must happen about as often as Hailey’s comet.

They are still trying to bury the story on their sports page as Roy William’s summer press conference gets top billing followed by Venus Williams, then the football story.

It’s pretty bad the way that the school does everything it can to obstruct the investigation - fighting tooth and nail to block the release of phone records, parking tickets, etc.

But, yeah, nothing to see here, folks. Move along.

What I really want to see is the financials of the tutor in question. She probably wasn’t making much as a tudor for the university (if she was I want to put together a class action lawsuit because I didn’t make shit as a TA) but I imagine she was making a good bit of money to “babysit” Butch Davis’ “kids”. She would’ve had to have made damn good money to pay for parking/plane tickets for the players that are known and probably even more for ones we don’t know about.

I don’t want to gloss over Tom’s point. This is an institution whose faculty, alums, students, and thousands of other people not even affiliated with it, have long placed it on a moral and ethical pedestal. They self righteously often and loudly proclaimed that it is a “special place”, a “hallowed” place, where they “do things the right way”. The more obnoxious of that group were often condescending to other schools, alums, etc.

That veneer is gone now. Forever.

The truth of the matter is that everyone from the lowliest alumni club member to the head of the association, the university, the athletic directors, the coaches, players, staff, boosters, tutors, etc all wanted to win (and reclaim the spotlight that left with Mack Brown) so damn badly that they intentionally looked the other way at very obvious wrongdoing. That’s the only way this happens. Everyone has to be in on it, or at least willing to ignore it.

It’s an institutional sized scar that will never, ever heal.

And the saddest thing is - look what it got them. Nothing. Doesn’t coach Davis have a losing conference record since he came to the school?

clt could not endorse this any more.

And unlike USC (or Boise State, for that matter), North Carolina escaped the dreaded Lack of Institutional Control charge that usually elicits the Committee on Infractions' harshest penalties

Ah yes, Boise State. Remember the major violations that got their football team in a world of trouble? Remember, LOIC is one step below the death penalty.

The football staff was surprised to learn that the summer housing arrangements were a violation.

In most cases, incoming players slept on a couch or floor. The 40 violations involved $4,934 in impermissible benefits, ranging from $2.34 to $417 for each individual. The money has been repaid and donated to charity, Boise State said.

And this doozy?

13. Men’s tennis Allegation: Coach Greg Patton arranged for a prospective student-athlete to live with a family in Boise for four to five weeks. The athlete paid rent.

Check out the non-lack-of-institutional-control allegations against the Tar Heels:

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/story/9760333/

The notice also alleges that during 2009 and 2010 the university failed to investigate information related to preferential treatment and benefits received by one student-athlete which triggered the NCAA investigation after the student-athlete reported the information to administrators within the football program.

How is someone allowed to get about a hundred parking tickets on 9 different cars, including Mercedes, BMWs, etc?

I wish I could get by with that. I could then park any place I wanted to at Niner baseball games.

clt looks forward to when ol roy gets implicated as well.

Nah- they simply don’t have to cheat. Too many kids want to go there and how do you blame them?

Now that being said, I do think kids like Jackson Simmons who is going to be recruited over for 4 years are nuts for not going somewhere they could actually play.

There is cheating to get them there and then there is cheating once they get there. I have NO doubt that the academic assistance the football players were getting bleeds over to the basketball team.

After all, they are the top team on campus and should be first at the trough, right? Unless some Raleigh news organization uncovers something I do not see the NCAA even looking though.

If UNC-CH is willing to let it’s football team get perks and extra “tutoring”, you can bet your ass their crown jewels in the basketball program were getting even more.

If the local media wasn’t all UNC-CH grads, this would be a witch hunt to make the connection.

Didn’t one of the football players implicated also play a few games with the basketball team?

Same athletic director for all sports. Would not be surprised if the basketball program was “dirty”. Does anyone really believe, for example, that UNC-CH hired Tyler Hansbrough’s mother because she was the best person for the job? Too much $ is involved for any real investigation to take place. As long as they win, appear on TV ad nauseam, and sell mountains of merchandise, they aren’t going to be bothered by any rules except their own.

I can’t believe JFelt had the audacity to accuse chapel hill grads in the media of being biased.

Michael McAdoo says because the UNC-CH Honor Court found him innocent 2 of 3 times, & he didn’t know he wasn’t supposed to get help on his studies, he should play. Yeah, sure, I’m just going to bet $ a court will overturn an perm. NCAA suspension for this. :))
