If i remember correctly the student body president rang the bell when Chancellor Dubois announced we would be starting football.
Yes, the bell was used at one of the celebrations held regarding football in the salons in SAC. That was the only event I have missed. I canāt remember what exactly it was for.

Thanks emf was looking for the article but couldnāt find it.
If they attended graduation then they know it exists.
Do you remember who your key note speaker was? Iām willing to bet most alums donāt recall theirās either. The bell is forgetable.
Donāt get me wrong, Iām not AGAINST the bell, just havenāt understood why some on here revere it.
I say if we have to start somewhere, why not the whistle??? I love the idea of steam filling the sky after a TD. Ties into the train reference. Signals for everyone to get out of our way. Iām in on that.
The bell is on my class ring, right under the Universityās seal. I have a picture of me standing at teh bell on graduation day. The bell is one of the few things that has historical significance on this campus. If you donāt know about the bell, then do some research.

In July 1965, state and local officials, including Governor Dan Moore and Charlotte College trustees, met in the Atkins Library to sign papers conveying Charlotte College to the University of North Carolina. After those signings, Governor Moore walked out of the Library Building and rang the Old Bell in celebration.

Trains have Whistles AND a Bell
Sadly, I do remember my commencement speaker. It was Bill Friday. I wish I could forget him. He just rambled on and onā¦and on and made no sense. Afterwords, I had family members ask me if he was a last second replacement for someone else. Regrettably, I had to say no. He was the choice. To this day, no one I know who was there could ever explain what he said.
In another strange graduation twist, ours was rescheduledā¦the Charlotte Coliseum (as Bojangles Coliseum was then known) had been double booked with UNC Charlotte commencement and an Amway convention for the same day. In true 49er fashion,we got bumped back to Sunday and Amway got what they wantedā¦big deal??? Well, it was decided at such a late time, I had family that rescheduled hotels and airfareā¦so yes it sucked.
As far as the bellā¦yes, it is one of the few things (maybe the only thing) that comes close to tradition. During my 4 years, I saw it exactly 1 TIMEā¦on graduation day. So it didnāt create an immediate memory for me. As Iāve read more and seen pictures, Iāve come to appreciate its place in school history.
It does appear to be kept in some āsecret bunkerā and made public on special occasions. If the school really wants to promote history and tradition, the bell should be somewhere public. If I knew where it was, I would surely make a point of showing to campus visitors and discussing its place in school history.
But as Iāve learned thru the years, history and tradition are not very important at UNC Charlotte (will save rant on _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ for another day).
The bell is really the only tradition we have so why mess with it?
Iām interested to see the electrical light parade. Could be really awesome as long as it done right and great way to get the community to bring their families to campus.
I think there should be some sort of tradition that gets freshman involved as soon as the get on campus.
I think that our FB Tradition should be Winning.

Pathetic.

Hardly
I work with 5 Charlotte alums in my office. Iām the only one that knew about the bell. Iām not trying to defame any traditions we have, simply donāt get the dogmatic appreciation for the bell. You taking a shot at me illustrates justification for my confusion. Youāre seriously that offended that Iām not pledging allegiance to the bell?
I knew about the bell - but it wasnāt until I graduated that I actually saw it. I can completely see how if you didnāt walk you have no idea we had a bell.
I like building it up to be more, it isnt a HUGE traditional thing here, but we dont really have anything that is.
I know about the bell, I have read Ken Sanfordās book, and I have seen it at graduations, but I like the whistle idea myself. I would like to see a big steam whistle mounted on the side of the video board that leaks steam throughout the game and blows when we score. A low frequency blast that rattles your insides. The bell is free so I get using it, but I would rather see us embrace a mining theme.
I donāt see why you canāt incorporate both a bell and a whistle. Ring the bell as the team is coming onto the field and after the game if the niners win. Blow the whistle for each score.
I like it the other way around actually. Start with the whistle as they come out of the tunnel (like āTime to go to work!ā) and then whistle at the end of the game if the Niners win. And we use the bell for each score.

Instantly better than Appās parade but I like it because itās outside the box idea.
I wouldnāt have a problem with that either Iām just not in the line of thinking that we should do one and not the other.

Yup and we dont do that kind of thinking very often.
