This thread rocks.
Heard this song in a movie and liked it. Listened to it more and really like it. Really well written and crazy sad. Not sure his style is always my kinda thing, but I’m sure some more of his songs are right down my alley. When I first heard it I thought it was someone trying to be like Paul Simon from S&G days lol.
If you ever wanna talk Elliott Smith, just give me a buzz Bust. Been a fan for about 15 years now.
His lyrics and themes are consistently on the sad side, but his songwriting, and particularly the melodies, are almost jubiliant. It’s an interesting, but powerful combination.
I do still hold the belief that he is probably the best pop songwriter of the last 20 or so years. He had a rough childhood, battled drugs, got into bar fights, and stabbed himself to death (or his girlfriend Jennifer Chiba did it - ask the LAPD), but in spite of all that crap, he churned out a large body of work that was consistently not just good, but noteworthy and great. You can always tell who the great ones were by how they were regarded by their peers:

I cannot get enough of Cults - Abducted. I think it’s now the top track on pitchfork. It’s fantastic. They’ve already released about 4 songs from their debut record, and it still won’t be out until June 7th. Unless the rest if lackluster filler, this album is gonna at least be in the best of the year discussion. Not bad for a debut for two people that had no intentions of a music career a few months ago.
Anyway, its a great track. It’s not rock, but it’s still awesome. Give it a chance.
Finally found a copy of Blackfield’s latest, Welcome To My DNA, at FYE at Concord Mills. It’s the third studio album of the collaboration between Porcupine Tree front-man Steven Wilson and Israeli musician Aviv Geffen. Currently touring Europe (in Rome tonight) before coming to North American in mid-May.
Definitely not Porcupine Tree, in either sound (more on the arty/popish side and definetely no deviations into metal as with PT!) or length of song (longest is 5:00, with most in the 3:00 to 4:00 minute range). In fact, Wilson only penned one song (“Waving”) for this album. Still good stuff, though.

Somehow when I posted that I knew at least one person who posts in this thread would be a big enough Elliott Smith fan to reply.
Get off yo ass and jam, honky.
Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On - 05 - Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On
Black Keys/ White Stripes fans should enjoy this. From their 2011 self-titled album.
Just stumbled on this live performance for Sirius/XMU:

POBPAH - Belong is getting a ton of ipod time this past week due to its heavily Smashing Pumpkins/My Bloody Valentine influenced guitars. Lyrics are more bubble gummy, but why not? It’s the summer.

I’ll be the first to admit that Will Sheff is decidedly off putting. But ever since Black Sheep Boy, I have just overlooked it. This song isnt bad. I’m giving it a few listens to see if I warm to it. Disappointed to once again see he’s not letting his new female guitarist rip…
Almost forgot…Art Brut are a personal favorite of mine. Partly because of how bad I effing hated them the first few times I heard them. This song is pretty straightforward for them, but it’s solid. I anticipate some people will loathe them anyway…

Lady Gaga’s new album came out yesterday… how many of you cool guys went and got that? huh?
I know NA is a “Little Monster”.
I actually like this single from her album
Lady Gaga - The Edge Of Glory (Audio)
I think it’s her best song on all her albums.
