I agree with this, I can’t name too many albums that come in at 30 minutes or less. I guess it all depends on what type of music it is though. I would guess most of the albums I listen to come in around 45 minutes, 12-14 tracks at about 3.5 minutes a piece.

I think back in the day, it was more common to see shorter albums. It was partly to do with the kind of music because a ton of oldies clock in at 2-3 min. But I was looking at Led Zep and their first 4 albums were all 40+ minutes. And harder rock tends to be longer and more drawn out, which is often what I listen to. But punk doesn’t screw around as much and is more short and to the point, so I bet my Misfits albums are ~30 minutes. And then funk is long and drawn out like crazy usually so those are long albums too.
It was actually a product of the format. A 12" record can hold, at most, 45 minutes total. So, bands typically made albums from 30-40 minutes with around 5 songs per side.
Van Halen’s first 4 records:
35 minutes
32 minutes
33 minutes
30 minutes
CDs changed a lot of that. But 30 minutes was industry standard for an LP, because it meant that it couldn’t be played at 45 RPM, which would be an extended play.
I dont know what the average length is now, but I’m betting that its between 40-50 minutes and I’m betting its been that way since the late 60’s at least.
I dont mind a short album. I actually think that most releases go on for to long anyway. Some of my favorite albums of all time are around 30-35 minutes (Pet Sounds, Revolver, Ziggy Stardust)

Cassette Tapes and CDs made longer albums possible. Before that, 45 minutes was the max. I would say 35 minutes is probably the average length for albums.

Been listening to it all morning.
This isn’t necessarily a 311 thing, but it bothers me when a band puts out a really short album. 28 minutes?! That’s just above some EPs! haha.
I mean I even used to think like a 40 minute CD was a bit short, but still 28 seems a little weak. I just happened to be listening to Soundgarden when you first brought this up, and Superunknown is 70 minutes. Universal Pulse fits in the Superunknown 2 1/3 times!
Yeah, it is pretty short, but I don’t mind it that much.
The last few of their albums have been plagued by some very weak songs that bring down the overall album.
DTOM had Waiting, a song that is only mildly better than Rebecca Black’s “Friday” and one that I quickly skip when it comes on my playlist rotation with friends in the car, for fear that they might realize that it is a 311 song.
Uplifter had some good points, but songs like Daisy Cutter, Hey You, and Two Drops in the Ocean pulled down an album that was otherwise mediocre.
However, Universal Pulse doesn’t have the dead weight… every song is enjoyable. I’d rather have thirty minutes of enjoyable listening than only enjoy thirty minutes of a forty-five minute album.
And yeah… the art isn’t that great. I will say it looks a lot better on the actual album than on a computer image.
Speaking of 311, is anyone rolling out to the 311, Sublime With Rome show?
Thinking about it. I’m going to Pow Wow the weekend after, so I’m thinking about just saving the money for the trip.
GorillavsBear called this their “November Rain”. You be the judge. It is pretty epic.
New album released Sept 23rd, and they’re playing TWO shows in NC - Asheville and Chapel Hill.
A Perfect Circle-The Hollow-TWC Amphitheatre 7/19/11

Pixies are playing Greensboro in November, picked up tickets last week.
I like that Girls song NA, and I like that their “November Rain” is titled “Vomit.”

All 3 parts of The Crane Wife live and acoustic. Neat!
Anybody open to giving 311 a listen, the new album is available on Amazon for $3.99 this weekend.
After listening to it a few times through, I can confidently say this is their best album in ten years.

100% agree. They went back to the winning formula

and yet, they remain the newer, more mature identity that comes with their age.
It’s hard to take a band of 40-year-olds rapping about smoking weed very seriously. They’ve grown up, found a new sound, and yet have reconnected it to their old formula.
It really is a great album.
Going to see these guys in Spartanburg Thursday… will be my second time seeing them this year.
Also digging this random youtube vid:
@Max Power, I caught that video a week or two ago, was definitely something new and she has a voice.
For NinerAdvocate and my fellow Shoutbox Gang members, it’s been a tough week.
They heard me shoutboxing and told me stop, quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock.
The song is called vomit because of Proverbs 26:11: “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness.”
Awesome.
Two bands we played with last night, for fans of indie rock along the lines of the nationals:
