Thinking this one may be a grower…
These guys were at Pow Wow… I’ve been listening to them ever since.
This week I have listened to Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Eagles, Moody Blues, Clapton, The Band, Robin Trower, Skynard, The Stones, The Who, and CCR.
That’s what I call a good week.
New Feist - How Come You Never Go There
or http://soundcloud.com/feist-1/how-come-you-never-go-there-2
Still love her voice. She’s done well since she left Broken Social Scene. New album is out October 4th.
Also, I listened to this for the first time in ages. Holds up really well. Solid piece of Britpop. Not a single dud track on it:
Cant believe that’s already 5 years old.
Behind the Scenes with Wilco Frontman Jeff Tweedy - September 2011 - St. Louis Magazine
If you watch Entourage, you probably heard this track over the closing credits for this week’s episode (#94: The Big Bang).
There are two versions - the more guitar heavy original - http://www.415project.com/theOCMD/01%20Mammalian%20Locomotion.mp3 - Will probably appeal to fans of The Black Keys and similar.
Then, there’s the remix, by Kevin Parker and Cam Avery of Tame Impala - which is trippier and more focused on the drum and vocal effects: http://www.415project.com/theOCMD/02%20Mammalian%20Locomotion%20(Kevin%20Parker%20_%20Cam%20Avery%20Remix).mp3
I like both of them.
Didn’t really get the hype around her last album, but this song is pretty good:
St Vincent - Cruel on Letterman 8-29-11
Tigers Jaw, which is one of the best things I’ve heard in a long time.
And new Samiam!!!
I pira… err acquired the entire new Wilco album prior to my beach trip last week. More mellow overall than I expected, but still very solid. I’ve already pre-ordered the collector’s edition, but I couldn’t wait. If you want a copy, I might know where you can get one.
PS - One Sunday Morning (song for Jane Smiley’s boyfriend) might be the most mellow song I’ve heard in years. It’s a long, long, album closer that does NOT wear out it’s welcome. It’s superb. Also, I don’t know why I was apathetic about I Might. In the context of the album, it’s fantastic.
Another track I snatched right before I left was Girls - My Ma. Honey Bunny was cute in a throw back surf-pop way, but I greatly prefer this track. Heavy on the melody and backing harmonies… More in line with Vomit, if you liked that one.
Picked up a couple of other lesser known tracks from probably my favorite new music website anymore - http://bestnewtracks.com/ It’s a little heavy on favoritism for electronica, but otherwise, it’s one of the best ways to catch emerging bands.
PS - I dont like that St Vincent track. I know Annie is a superb guitar player, but I don’t like her more mathematical doodling. It’s just not my thing. I’m all about melody, not technical hot dogging or experimentation.
That website doesn’t have Tiger’s Jaw. Can’t be reliable.
Her guitar is my favorite part of that track, really good song, hopefully the rest of the album is strong. Both that and the new Girls album are getting pretty strong reviews according to my Google feed.
I’d be interested in more details on that Wilco album…
My favorite live recording of Jimi Hendrix is streaming on Spinner. Live at Winterland. Its just been remastered and its fantastic!
I’m listening to Bush’s new album.
I know I shouldn’t but I’ve always dug Bush.
Checking out a band called Black Country Communion. Anyone heard of them?

I’ve always liked them too. In fact, one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen, even with the “meltdown” of Cake’s John McCrea that occurred prior to Gavin Rossdale & Co. taking the stage!
Wow, that’s quite a lineup! Hadn’t thought of Glenn Hughes since he was in Deep Purple as their bassist and co-lead singer (with some guy named David Coverdale). Saw DP at the original Charlotte Coliseum back in the mid-1970s!
I am wearing out the new Girls album, and several other upbeat bands, but then was floored when I heard this minimalist, notsalgiac/wistful song by Gem Club… feels a bit like Bon Iver, but it’s amazing the depth of feeling they get from so little instrumentation…
(portions of the video are NSFW)
This is just different enough that I’ve decided to give it a week to see if it sticks…
Thundercat 105: Daylight Live at the Echo
Effing love the sax… really fantastic. I think I just love the live music vibe of this rather trhan the song itself.
Okkervil River deserves a listen too… Haven’t bought their new one yet. Was still making up my mind:
Washed Out finally made a video for my favorite song off their new album.
I wore that song out this summer - almost.
Lots of other interesting stuff here - http://pitchfork.com/tv/musicvideos/?q=&t=date there are quite a few others that I like for their originality. Kinda like the Other Lives track, Salem- King Night, Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Ffunny Ffriends, and I watched the Purling Hiss - Voodoo video the whole way through. Deerhoof & Ty Segall tracks aren’t bad either.
A list of the top 150 songs of the past 15 years. Random, and it has a British tilt to it as it was done by NME, but there are a lot of good songs listed here I had totally forgotten about.

That list contains no Modest Mouse. It is hereby rendered invalid.

That’s a good catch, the Brits must hate Modest Mouse? They didn’t have any room on the list for another American act with 18 Strokes songs on there…
