Kind of all over the place stylistically. They either take chances or are paying homage to a lot of different musical styles, depending on your perspective. I tend towards the latter, and it’s not a knock. It’s just a really solid pop/rock listen. And yes, the guitars are just heavy enough on just enough tracks to not bore the rock fans.
There is some #fuckingcanoeingmusic on there, namely two Bon Iver songs and one Fleet Foxes, but honestly, Holocene is not as good as anything on For Emma Forever Ago. Likewise, nothing on the new Fleet Foxes album (including Grown Ocean) is as good as:
That last one is an all time classic. It has quickly become my favorite moody driving song, possibly of all time.
Also kinda dig Sunloathe off that album. I also kinda dog: St Vincent - Cruel & Feist - How Come you Never Go There. I am trying to like Real Estate, The Horrors - Still Life, and James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream. Interesting comment on the WFUV live perfomance (google it) - devout hip hop lover blown away by this song. Guess I wouldn’t have thought of that, but it does kinda sound like a white guy trying to do, I dunno, D’angelo? Anybody got a better comparison?
Got a nice little playlist of brand new stuff going:
Guided By Voices - The Unsinkable Fats Domino
Guards - Do it Again
White Rabbits - Heavy Metal
Shins - Simple Song
Cat Power - King Rides By
Sister Crayon - Aint No Sunshine (cover)
Sleigh Bells - Born To Lose
And I am trying to find something I just head a little bit of today on My Old Kentucky Blog - I think the band was called Victor Virrellea or something like that.
GBV song is classic GBV. Love it. Drunk off their ass midwestern all american rock band just ripping off great licks with a legendary frontman who was/is euqally as likely to pass out on the stage as he is to spit/pour beer all over the crowd. Oh yeah, their songs rule too. These guys should be HOFs.
Guards is the band of Cults female lead singer’s brother. Damn this song is good. It’s just so much power chord fun. The vocals are just okay, but I got past that quickly.
White Rabbits - reserving comment _ I want to like this so badly, but this sounds nothing like them.
Shins - I have changed my mind - this song is great.
Sleigh Bells - Music that celebrates ADD.
Cat Power - I love Chan. She can do little wrong in my book. She has one of the sexiest voices around.
That Aint No Sunshine cover is just good enough to mention. Everyone knows that song, but it’s a fresh enough take to warrant attention.

I almost didn’t want to listen to this because I knew from past experience how this would absolutely overpower me…
It’s not intended for everyone. That’s for certain. But for what it is, it’s absolute genius. The raw emotional power of the sparse arrangement, the subtle, almost underplayed brass as the emotion swells… Daniel Rossen gets it. He is one of the most talented song writers alive right now. It’s staggeringly beautiful.
And BTW, kinda off topic - but the indie rock in commercials thread is gone - I had notcied this and its annoying as hell too:
The New Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. They’re thinking about changing their name to Led Zeppelin, or something like that.
