I’m just saying obsession over movies and books might be taking things a bit too far for mediums that are designed to be entertainment and enjoyment. I am a massive Star Wars fan - hell I graduated by writing a 30 page paper on The Force, but at the end of the day it’s just a movie. Like it, don’t like - the sun comes up tomorrow.
The Star Wars fan community has nearly ruined that franchise, looks like the GoT one is well on it’s way to doing the same thing.
Be a fan man! Just keep it balanced or you start to develop a hate for something that you love. I know how much you love this series. Seems most SW fans exist now just to complain, don’t let that happen here!
Well her faceless man training helps her sneak around undetected. Showed as much when she was in Braavos. On top of that she knows the castle in and out. The show doesn’t outright say it but in the books she’s always sneaking around the castle. Or should I say the first book speaks to her habit doing it. She did it while in Kings Landing as well.

GRRM is partly to blame. If he couldn’t finish his story in time, or at least flesh out enough of it such that the show writers had a clear structure towards the end, how could anyone expect show writers to finish it well. They even said the whole night king culmination was just something they thought would shock us…I guess it did?
The episode was frustrating. There were cool scenes, but largely in visual flourish alone. What was Jon brought back from the dead for? His main antagonist from the start of the series being the White Walkers, the tracing of Valerian steel to be conveniently given to each good fighter, it all amounted to nothing in favor of an Arya sneak attack (and no she’s not a highly trained assassin people, she barely made it to the pledging stage and being blind for a few weeks and getting whacked by a waif does not an assassin make)
I’d be fine with her getting the kill if anyone else had supported it. Even Theon just died for the lulz instead of making that to distract the Night King or something, and every fan favorite character that was being chewed on for 50 minutes came out just fine.
I think all my desire a rewatch is dead – every scene building up the Night King will just feel empty now that it amounted to very little.
I think that GRRM both set up the show for success and for failure. He’s probably struggled to finish his story for many reasons, but one of them is that the world became so sprawling and chaotic that it’s hard to finish a normal story arc in any way that is satisfying without going on forever. The show clearly was set with a deadline to end the story by this season, and that means cutting some corners. NA, I agree with a lot of your points about the shortcomings of the story / episode, but I think you’re conflating the show and book when you use the book titles as an argument about what’s central to the story. The show has always been more about the political scheming than fantasy and definitely seems to have downplayed the fantasy elements at numerous points (judging by book readers’ complaints, I haven’t read the books myself).
I also don’t think the Night King as a concept is necessarily done yet, though we’ll see what the writers decided to do. I still think Dany is set up to take an evil turn and it would be interesting if the writers have her set her dragons on the world and inadvertently accomplish what the Night King set out to do (e.g. kill Bran and a ton of people?). That said, maybe Aria will just jump up onto a flying dragon and kill Dany before she can hurt anyone…
Seems both Arya and her boyfriend disagree with you. Per NA’s link, Williams worried that fans would say “how can a 100 lb girl do all of this”. She was spot on for me. Frankly, I’ve been saying that about her character for the past 5 seasons.
So in a show about dragons, black magic, iceyknight Kings that somehow can raise people from the dead, resurrected priests, wild fire, an ice wall constructed by people without modern equipment that stands taller than One Wells Fargo Center in Charlotte, people who are able to cut off faces that they can wear to assume the identity of those whose face was stolen, Frankenstein like resurrection, among other things, we are somehow focused on the physical abilities of an individual character based on her size. Makes sense.
Yes. Imagining and believing are 2 different things.
We allow ourselves to expand our imagination and accept those items that you mention because they aren’t in our real world. It’s fun to imagine those things. We have no idea whether a Frankenstein Mount can take on an icey knight king, or if a dragon can be taken down with arrows.
But a 5’ tall, 100 lb, adolescent female is in our real world. We have a pretty good idea Ariana Grande isn’t taking out Julius Peppers.
Being small, a trained assassin, and being very familiar with Winterfell made Arya the ideal person to sneak up on the Night King. If a huge Dragon can’t kill the Knight King then why would a full sized man be a better candidate?
