Poll: Your feelings about UNC-CH

Trust me Lew- when you get in real life for a decade u will see what I'm sayin. People never cheer for their grad school OVER their first love....unless they are shallow.

Again its great if he cheers his Heels but not when they play us.

Metro. Where are you from? Are you from the state of North Carolina? Did you grow up a Charlotte fan? If so, then good for you. I grew up a Tar Heel fan. Most kids in this state grow up a Tar Heel or State or Dook fan unless they have parents/family that went to another school. When I got to Charlotte, I became a Charlotte fan. I still enjoyed seeing the Tar Heels do well, but I was a Charlotte fan. After Charlotte, I was fortunate enough to get into Chapel Hill. Why would I not have just as much allegiance to a school that I cheered for as a fan for the first 18 years of my life and then spent three years attending? I was in school at Chapel Hill with a lot of students that went to undergrad elsewhere and I can guarauntee you that I’m not the only one that cheers hard for the Tar Heels.

Jeez. It must be hard keeping track of all these stupid rules you try to force on people.

Both my wife and a cousin went to other colleges prior to Charlotte (Western and UNCG respectively). They both cheer for Charlotte over both of their undergrad schools. Neither would consider themselves shallow.

I was one, and though I know I'm going to get bashed anyways, I will say that I would have preffered an "it depends" option...

If Charlotte were to play UNC tonight, I’d pull for UNC. If UNC had lost to Valpo or anyone else earlier this year, I’d pull for Charlotte. To me, it matters what effect the outcome will have on the respective team. If Charlotte is playing UNC in the tourney and they have a realistic chance at winning the title, I’d be pulling for Charlotte. If it’s obviously just an upset situation and the Heels have a chance to cut down the nets, I’m pulling for the Heels. In regular season baseball, I’m pulling for Charlotte. If it’s the regionals and we’re talking same situation, upset but no real shot at title (although looking at Fresno I guess anyone has a shot) then I’m pulling for Heels.

Some of you can call it bandwagon, but bottom line, I want championships for my schools. If both have a shot at a title, I’m going with Charlotte since obviously they need it more than Carolina to build.

Edited to add that I have degrees from both schools. Thanks for the reminder SF.

you still suck…get out…:smile::smile::smile::smile::smile::49ers:

He has just as much right to consider himself a Chapel Hill alum as a Charlotte alum... sure, he got his undergrad degree here... but what is making him more money... his Charlotte undergrad or his Chapel Hil postgrad?

I can shed some light since I am in a similar situation.

My undergraduate degree is from Charlotte, I bleed green. I root for Charlotte over everyone else in all things.

My graduate degree is from Rutgers, I follow them and root for them, but nowhere near the level I do for Charlotte.

I even have friends who played basketball at Rutgers who I talked **** to before we played them back in 2005 (probably not a good idea from the outcome). I went to some games, but I didn’t get the same attachment I got to Charlotte from 98-02. However, while in school at Rutgers I did get an attachment to their football program and it remains, as I go to a few games every year living not so far away.

My experience at Rutgers was like that of an undergrad though, I had undergrad roommates, athlete roommates, **** I lived in a house with 8 people. I went to house parties, frat parties, college bars, tailgates, etc. My grad school was arguably more of an undergrad experience than my experience at Charlotte was, but that will never change the fact that Charlotte was my undergrad and will always be my #1 team.

IMO, law school is a different beast, most law schools are disconnected from the undergrad aspects of the university, since you really can’t take law courses as an undergrad. A friend of mine goes to Fordham law, but has really no attachment to the school and that is a pretty damn good law school, not so good athletically.

Just my long-winded 2 cents.

This thread is a joke.

Chapel Hill is discussed more on this thread than Charlotte. Stop whining about other schools and pride yourself in yours.

i told someone this last night and i’ll say it again: if you’re a tar heel fan, fine, just don’t post anything on nn.n about it, you will get owned. if you’re going to be a tar heel fan, be a closet tar heel fan, and please, PLEASE don’t wear anything carolina on our campus, it offends us who pay tuition and bleed green and gold. thank you

99.9% of Charlotte fans did not grow up pulling for the Niners.

Neither of these are examples of proof, but just things on which we have come out on the terribly short end of the stick. UNC-CH could or could not have had a hand in either.

Has there been documented lobbying or petitioning by UNC-CH against us?

If Charlotte not having a law school or medical is not proof, then what is a good reason for us to not have one? As you go through the possible reasons you’ll see that it is proof.

Like any other political issue, you’re not going to find very much hard proof that’s as blatant as saying “we think Charlotte is a second tier university”. It just wouldn’t be the politically correct thing to do. But they do vote on the funding for each university and we’ve routinely been voted to receive the least per student. That is documented proof.

With all do respect to your wife and cousin, probably part of the reason they pull for Charlotte is because they feel it is a better program. With that in mind, what does that tell you about people who might pull for UNC-CH over Charlotte?

i told someone this last night and i'll say it again: if you're a tar heel fan, fine, just don't post anything on nn.n about it, you will get owned. if you're going to be a tar heel fan, be a closet tar heel fan, and please, PLEASE don't wear anything carolina on our campus, it offends us who pay tuition and bleed green and gold. thank you

The thing is, it’s not the Tar Heel fans who start these posts. I’ve never started a thread about anything Carolina. I come to the defense of UNC when I see constant bashing from everyone else on NNN.

True. It should be obvious how much we struggle to get coverage, merchandise, exposure. So to hear one of your own is part of the problem, is like adding gas to the fire.

I’d like to know how I’m part of the problem? I support Charlotte just as much as most, admittedly not all, of you. Some of you just can’t understand how someone could ever support Charlotte and Chapel Hill at the same time.

THAT’S WHAT FANS DO! They criticize other schools. If you have an allegiance to both schools I can see how you might be offended. But you shouldn’t be surprised when a fan is being a fan. I asked before, do you go on the UNC-CH boards and tell people to not criticize Dook?

I'd like to know how I'm part of the problem?
You are either a total dumbass or are just over here trying to cause trouble. What are you doing on here? End of discussion.

I admit you are in a some what different situation having gone to both schools. The way you can have an affect though is that every pro Niner helps us, but every pro UNC-CH can hurt Charlotte. We are told by stores they carry more UNC-CH merchandise because it sells better. We are told by the Observer that UNC-CH gets more coverage because they get more hits on the internet. So while you may read the Charlotte article or buy merchandise it does help. But if you click on a UNC-CH story or buy a UNC-CH shirt, you are actually hurting Charlotte.

Technically, he’s cancelling himself out… except that the Observer runs 10 Chapel Hill articles to every 1 of ours…

With my cousin…I have no clue. You might be right. But for my wife, I can say that she has a greater emotional attachment to Charlotte than Western. It has little to do with the level of play, cause she could really give 2 ****s about most sports. Its all about the fact that she had more big time “life events” happen while at Charlotte.

I totally get the UNC-CH hate. Totally get it. I hate the school, the wal-mart fans, everything. But I dont understand the need to rail on a guy for cheering for 2 schools that he attended. He’s both a tarheel and niner fan because he is both a tarheel and a niner. Its more common than people like Metro, with his endless string of arbitrary rules, might believe.

Who voted to root for the Heels vs. us?
It’s one thing to have them as #2, if you’ve got a reason to (like family,) but vs. us? Hell no.

I hope when I’m in my late 30s and have a couple of kids that I don’t spend all my time bashing people on a message board.
