The EV news thread 🔌

Higher rates of severe injury and death during vehicle crashes, faster roadway deterioration, lower taxes collected to pay for roads and bridges, higher energy costs for our energy grid…Everything is always a “small price to pay for…” a “healthier planet”
——

“Regardless, even if electric vehicles were going to grind down pavement faster, that’s a small price to pay for the benefits of a healthier environment, said Doug Mensman, Director of Transportation for the City of Los Angeles.

“If it is going to have to be just additional or more frequent infrastructure maintenance or reconstruction,” he said, “then that may be the price that we, as a society decide that we’re willing to factor into future budgets to get these benefits.”“

Finally! Good news from Tezla. Anyone get their truck yet?

I know you’re being sarcastic, but it’s amazing how many people have completely bought into this false narrative. Though I can’t really blame them. The media falls all over themselves to report on the few Tesla incidents, but is nowhere to be found when Chevy has to replace ALL their Bolt batteries because they are so dangerous. And two or three years ago BMWs were spontaneously catching fire left and right, but most people are totally unaware.

Tesla has produced over three million cars since their inception, and there have been like two dozen total car fires ever. In fact an average ice car is eleven times more likely to catch fire than a Tesla.

It’s sad how emotion and politics has completely taken over what should be an objective discussion of Tesla and EVs. Elon hasn’t done himself any favors, but neither have the click-mad media outlets.

Add Volkswagen/Audi to that list too as they had a large recall on electric vehicles for fire risk as well.

The fires are not unique to a maker - just to the battery tech. It is causing fire departments around the nation to reevaluate how they respond to accidents as it can take way more water to put one out. I think even Tesla says that it can take up to 8,000 gallons to extinguish a Model s fire compared to under 1,000 for a regular ICE car. Probably something else tech needs to solve. If we can make a gas powered car relatively fire safe no question, we can find a better ways to bring down fire risk with EVs.

Just use a dump truck full of dirt to smother the fire lol

Either that or drop the car in a lake.

What is funny is placing the car in a dumpster of water is something that has been done if the car has hit thermal runaway to stop it from sparking back up.

Ars Technica: A new battery management system could boost EV range by 20 percent.

Can it tow near infinite mass? Their sells are already equal to the number of tezla trucks delivered, so Dodge has THAT going for them. Cheers! To Infinity and beyond, or 14,000!

Ignore Elon the thumbnail. This is a video about sodium ion batteries replacing lithium ion, and the advantages. Has really nothing to do with him.

At a minimum, sodium ion will be a great choice for energy storage where weight doesn’t matter as much. That will reduce demand for lithium in those applications and hopefully decrease the price.
