The Search for a New Men's Basketball Coach has begun

Crean could still recruit after taking over at UGA, as getting the number one 2020 NBA Draft pick to suit up in Athens showed. Just couldn’t make it work as far as positive results on the court as the Bulldogs were only 16-16 (5-13 SEC) with Anthony Edwards in the lineup.

I wish we knew the story on McCollum and why some thinks it no longer has legs.

I thought Gottfried had a problem keeping his hands off the cheerleaders or something.

It was his point guard’s girlfriend, at Alabama

Want to know what Crean’s conference record was, all years combined, without Wade? 149-199. That’s right, 50 games below .500.

I remember it like this. Maybe some remember it differently. Lutz has been struggling at CLT with recruiting in the A10. He was near the end of his tenure in CLT. Marshall agreed to take a job, and I guess the job was to be Witchita State. Then he rebuffed on it, stating that he and the family loved Rock Hill and did not want to move. This would have been the time to have gotten Marshall. He could have commuted from Rick Hill. Instead, Marshall changed his mind again and went to Wichita State (a couple weeks later) and Lutz got fired shortly after that. That was our chance to get a younger Marshall without the baggage. But the ship sailed. I even called local sports radio to give my thoughts. Had CLT made that move then, we would not have had this decade of non relevance. When opportunities arise, you must act immediately. CLT knew his record of success but good ole Judy did nothing. In my estimation that was a huge mistake that has put our basketball program in peril.

Already knew it wasn’t good, hence why he was fired from Indiana and Georgia, still doesn’t dismiss that he made the tournament seven times after Wade and Sweet 16 three times so don’t particular get what you are attempting to prove.

The point was to say he did have success post Wade (he even made the tournament the year before Wade was eligible to play) and not that he was some great coach every single year.

Crean’s record by school:

Marquette (1999-2008)
190-96 overall
9 winning seasons
59-37 C-USA / 31-19 Big East = 90-56
5 NCAATs
3 NITs

Indiana (2008-17)
166-135 overall
6 winning seasons; 3 losing seasons (first 3 in Bloomington)
71-91 Big Ten
4 NCAATs
1 NIT

Georgia (2018-22)
47-75 overall
1 winning season; 2 losing seasons; 1 .500 season
15-57 SEC
0 postseason

Top 10 NBA Draft picks = 5

Crean’s resume looks like a textbook case of burnout / not changing with the times.

And I’m not trying to be mean. I bet my enthusiasm for the job would have flamed out long before his did. I think all coaches have a shelf life, and it’s not normally 30 or 40 years. Not at that level anyway. The guys who do it usually ride a wave of inertia. Cause it gets harder and harder to start over as you get older. That’s also why K’s back would suddenly go out every time he had a bad team… Gotta preserve that mo’.

Just a reminder that Crean was hired by IU in the wake of the Kelvin Sampson scandal, so it was a rebuilding project. As such, those first three seasons in Bloomington were spent resurrecting the program.

That said, his last five years - final season at IU and then four at UGA - have been pretty mediocre.

Marshall accepted the CofC job in 2006, only to change his mind after the introductory press conference in Charleston. He left Winthrop for Wichita State the following year.

Okay that supports what I was saying. Judy had a year to make a decision. It was obvious that Lutz was not going to continue to be successful in the A10. So, Judy could have moved on to Marshall in the off season. I think that was a huge mistake on her part. She was.so passive. She suspected that she was going to fire Lutz and she did it the next year. Why not make the move one year earlier and land Marshall. Very poor leadership.

Marshall wanted to stay in Rock Hill or in the area but he wanted to move to a bigger program. CLT was the only program that could have offered that. Judy dropped the ball, and he eventually moved the next year. Big mistake.

Tom Crean was 4-6 vs Bobby Lutz.

This makes me consider Crean actually…most other coaches had a far worse losing record against Bobby.

If you can beat Bobby 4 times out of 10…that’s a statement

1-6 without DWade.

Or…he literally owes all of his success to Wade.

Huh? What I’m trying to prove is what you just said, that it wasn’t good.

Getting to a Sweet 16 at Indiana is not the same thing as getting to Sweet 16 at Charlotte. The year they had Oladipo, they were an overwhelming favorite. Them losing in the Sweet 16 was an underachievement and negative for Crean’s resume.

Crean’s overall record is 403-306. During the three seasons he had Wade, MU was 68-27.

True. However, after Crean went 6-26, Mike White went 16-16 at UGA resurrecting the program.
