TV Binging Thread đŸ“ș

This is an epic failure, I have hated what I watched so far.

You are not alone.

Must be like books 7-11

I think the problem is that both book readers and casual fans are finding some of the same faults with it.

It’s not too late for the show to improve, but if it doesn’t, then I deserve all the flack I am going to catch for recommending this show. It’s not that it isn’t GoT - it never was going to be. It’s that the execution isn’t even close to that level so far. I’m embarrassed by it and confused as well, because a lot of people are involved that have made other things that are universally loved, including GoT.

My apologies to anyone I roped into the show. The books, aside from that slow stretch from 7-11, really are good.

Haven’t watched WoT yet (hope to this weekend) but got he same feeling from Foundation. It wasn’t horrible but it isn’t anywhere near my hopes or expectations given the source material.

Exactly how I felt about The Expanse.

Dopesick. HULU. Whoa.

Same.

I read a series of posts by author Brandon Sanderson on the early episodes of WoT. He made some fantastic points about the story. But almost as an aside, he also made a point that really resonated with me:

GRRM not only of course knew the source material for GoT, but he wrote or consulted / edited the screenplays / scripts for the early seasons if that show, and (the biggie) he was already an accomplished tv screenwriter, having worked on multiple hit shows.

Almost makes me wish that WoT had hired him to work on the screenplays for season 1. He and Robert Jordan were friends, and RJ gave him his big break by promoting his book series after WoT had already taken off. Maybe he would have done it on that basis (and as yet another excuse to not write Winds of Winter).

In terms of global audience demand prior to release, The Wheel of Time, which stars Oscar nominee Rosamund Pike as a badass magical leader, is tracking ahead of other recent fantasy series, per data firm Parrot Analytics. Global pre-release demand for The Wheel of Time was 13.5 percent higher than The Witcher ‘s as of four days ahead of their respective series premieres. The latter went on to become one of Netflix’s most-watched original series ever.

The Witcher got better as the season progressed, hopefully the same will happen.

If you are checking out the series, make sure you click up for the options within the episodes (I know it worked in episode 3 for me) and click on X-Ray, then Bonus Content.

There is a whole bonus series called WoT: Origins that explains many backstory concepts. It’s animated, but in a grim painting type of style. I have to say, I love the style. I prefer the aesthetic of it to the show. My only gripe is that they didn’t cram all the cool details into each one. It’s more high level.

Nevermind, I just saw Loial.

I give up. Show is straight trash. He’s not even comically awful.

Just remember, when you see him, he is supposed to look like this:

Instead, he looks like this:

He was supposed to be the one oddball fantastical character, like Gollum, but instead of being creepy, he was supposed to be massive, and somehow chill as hell despite being terrifying when he was angry. Basically he was supposed to be awesome.

I give up. This production team ruined WoT for everyone.

Is that the kid in Bad Santa?

I did not mind episode 1 f WoT. On a different note, if you like war documentaries, Amazon has Soviet Storm - WW2 in the East. Great documentary

I’ve watched the show a 2nd time through and it’s not as bad as I thought. In fact I enjoyed big sections of it. The writing is a little clunky at times but the good parts are there. There are lots of good lines and foreshadowing buried in the dialogue. I think it will grow on people on repeated viewings. It’s just very different than what I expected and probably what a bunch of GoT fans expected too.

Wish they just released everything at once like Netflix.

For anyone still hanging around for WoT, episodes 3 & 4 were much better. Just finished 4 and it was very good. Feels like the show is finding its legs.

It’s also the top streaming show and #1 pirated show in the world right now. I think Amazon has a hit.

It’s gotten better. A lot of book fans still turned off by all the changes.

I’m of the opinion that most of the changes are okay but the number of them do take away from the feeling that you are actually watching the same story. I also still find the aesthetics not my first choice.

But with the exposition dumps slowing down, the episodes are starting to focus more on character stories which make them better.

This could be good:

Deadline: ‘Dunk & Egg’: Steve Conrad To Write ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel Series In Works At HBO.

The story has a Forrest Gump aspect to it. I loved the writing.
