Wow. Gary Williams’ move pays dividends early. As much as we were all hooting and hollering over here about even courting him for recruitment, I am surprised Williams drug his school into that so far.
Well I have been away for a long time and this thread was just enough to pull me back in.
First off I would like to say how glad I am that we did not get him. While I do not know if we were recruiting him or not, I do know that his background gives some very very troubling indications. When you look back at the history of our program over the past 10 years, many of us would say that our favorite players were Eddie Basden, Jobey Thomas and Leemire Goldwire. Why? Because they busted it on and off the court. They were exemplary citizens.
Regardless of whether this young man knew how old this girl was or not, what normal individual jumps into bed with 3 other guys and 1 girl. Anyone with a sliver of a conscience would no doubt realizes that this is beyond hedonism. You can not justify this type of action calling it a youthful mistake. It reveals a lack of self control and a lack of good judgment. It also gives indications that he will probably develop a sense of entitlement which becomes so common among athletes and leads to complacency. Is that the type of young man we want as an ambassador for our university? Do we really think that in this big city with the environment that surrounds him that he will be able to avoid the distractions? While it is a possibility, reality has shown that many others have failed. I won’t pass judgment on him and say that he is incorrigible, however history has taught that we are not a great school to reform players with baggage.
He is Maryland’s problem now.

Not all that much of a surprise that Tyree Evans won’t be playing at Maryland.Terps coach Gary Williams and his staff offered the oft-troubled and talented junior college guard a scholarship more than a month ago. However, according to sources, Maryland athletic director Debbie Yow (who does not exactly see eye-to-eye with Williams) wasn’t aware that Evans was offered a scholarship.
Maryland put out a statement saying that Evans had decided that Maryland wasn’t the best fit for him.
Let’s be honest here. Williams and the Terps made a mistake by not doing their due diligence on the kid – and now are just trying to save face.
Evans was charged with intent to distribute marijuana in 2005 and one year later, he was accused of statutory rape. He was also arrested of trespassing in 2006. There was also a separate case of marijuana possession and handgun charges back in 2005.
