Yes, we need one there as well.
No doubt they did that on purpose
Iâm sorry to say that the message portrayed in the recent rebranding was convoluted. It needed to be concise and to the point. I believe that the PR firm that we hired to create the rebranding message just did not understand the problem.
Our own PA announcer was calling our band UNC Charlotte at the last game. If we do not use our own brand how do we expect others to use it.
AmazingâŚ. You know that was done on purpose. They got our new logo but seriously. Mike Hill has to be steaming after seeing that.
It could be on purpose, but it could also be that is still the school name. Theyâre technically not wrong. People warned that a half rebrand was still going to have these types of issues.
Technically they are wrong. Our Athletics goes by Charlotte. Not UNC Charlotte. They know what theyâre doing.
I agree about the half brand tho. Itâs putting a band aid on something that wonât go away until we are separated completely from the unc school system. This will never go away until then. Maybe DuBois knew this and fig it wasnât worth the effort to go half way with a ârebrandâ and didnât want the headache of a complete removal. That prob takes an enormous amount of planning, budgeting, logistics, etc
The latest re-branding is just a step in the process of becoming U of C. Getting our University brand matching Athletics is huge and will make the next step much easier. There will still be some confusion from some of the slower folks, but thats OK.
Not really. If someone says âWhat school are you playing?â, Charlotte is not a school, UNC Charlotte is.
Keep in mind these are people from South Carolina not always the most aware of anything in existence outside of the state line.
Thatâs probably the case. Iâm just impatient. We switched the the athletics name in 2000. Dubois became Chancellor in 2005. Along those time lines, it will 15-20 years before the next change.
Just seems like a missed opportunity.
Theyâre playing Charlotte. If they donât understand the difference between the âschoolâ name and the âAthleticsâ name then itâs a moot point. Do you go around saying UNC Chapel Hill is playing Virginia polytechnic institute and state university? Come on.
It could be because the representatives of the athletic department from the University of South Carolina ignored the requested protocol from our athletic department and instead relied on their own understanding based on their university system structure. Their structure is different from North Carolina in that our flagship university is named the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and theirs is officially the University of South Carolina (with no âat Columbiaâ at the end of their name). Moreover, if they were referring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill they would call them the University of North Carolina or UNC, and forget all about their official name like they felt compelled to do for us. Is that clear as mud? There is one way, and only one way, to keep this dichotomy from happening!
Please understand that if, and when, the official name of our school changes, we will NOT be âseparated completely from the unc school system.â We will, and should, remain a member of the University of North Carolina system.
Actual I do, and also have heard many others, say either UNC Chapel Hill or simply Chapell Hill. Plus, no one says âwhat athletics are you playingâ, they say school or team.
Look, Iâm not saying the people who do it arenât lazy, or arenât even doing it on purpose. But as long as our official school name is UNC Charlotte, they are not wrong to use that name.
When I posted that, I was thinking that itâs evidence that the rebrand doesnât go far enough. Thatâs actually a good thing if we act SOON on it, or itâs just another 20 years of name confusion log 2.0 and lots of long heavy sighing by me.
In essence it says that if there is even a hint of the UNC prefix in our name / brand, other institutions are going to use it. One of the popular talking points from opposing fans previously was âwell if you arenât UNCC then why is your website UNCC.edu?â Well, we changed that⌠Still with the prefix.
I got a tiny bit of comfort from a couple of Gamecock fans who saw that and remarked that they thought we had changed to just Charlotte years ago. Even the well meaning ones are confused.
Even when the rebrand was announced, the chancellor called us UNC Charlotte. The rebrand website says in formal situations and/or first references to call us UNC Charlotte.
I wasnât attempting to argue otherwise, but point of fact, athletics hasnât been UNC in 21 years, and now academics has taken on athletics branding, but with the stupid prefix.
Nothing is going to be enough until academics makes the full change. This is just proof of that.
