University Re-Branding: August 19, 2021

I’ll add…having UNC Charlotte as our official name does hurt our “appearance” for conference discussions.

Ask Mike hill if we should use Charlotte or unc Charlotte when referring to who is playing who. If he says that “technically” they are right and unc Charlotte is okay, then what the hell is the point of all this. Either break away completely or we’re all just spinning our wheels which gives us more fuel to throw our hands up and say I’ll root for someone else.

clt says most people he speaks with calls us “Charlotte” and the triangle area school “chapel hill”

“What school are you playing?”

Miami
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Louisville
Cincinnati
Houston
Clemson
Memphis
Tulsa

No one acts like they are confused.

Charlotte

“How are you playing a city in college football”

clt says the same logic can apply to states.

texas v oregon?

Everytime I see this point brought up I also think - “man, just toss Charlotte, UAB and UCF in there and that’s a helluva fun league in both revenue sports”. (I left Clemson out on purpose).

Gaber has been here for just over a year and look at the progress we have made on this issue. I have confidence that the next step will happen sooner rather than later.

The website is already charlotte.edu. There will be “All In C” logos all over the place on campus replacing the crown. Sounds like the heavy lifting will be done. Just need to push across the finish line. Once the UNC is dropped, there should be a smooth transition.

I’m kinda hoping we have our Spangler - football moment with the Prefix here soon… That’s what it’s gonna take IMHO.

I think you’re making my point, that it should have been a complete rebrand. Those are the names of the school in every one of those examples. It’s not UF Miami, UK Louisville, USC Clemson etc.

Mike isn’t who I need to ask, a Charlotte proponent. I’ve already been simply saying Charlotte for over 20 years.

Depending on how long an official full name change takes place, then yes, we could be spinning our wheels. Again, we already attempted to change the athletic name 20 years ago.

They call us Charlotte on sports center. That’s the source of truth for America.

Well, to be fair, I always refer to the Evil Empire as Chapel Hill because I know they prefer UNC.
Also love to call them Chapel Hill and refer, in the next sentence, to that school in Columbia as Carolina.
But then again, I just might be an asshole. :grinning:

Edit: This school needs to sue Chapel Hill for using its name.

I mentioned it before but I’ll say it again. I think if we had pushed for a formal name change at the state level at this time I am fairly certain it would have been shut down. And that would have killed name change for the foreseeable future. Instead we did what we can control and we will play the waiting game as calling us Charlotte either becomes common or the two names creates confusion. Either one opens the case for the formal name change.

I think we all want the formal change sooner rather than later, but I do think if we pushed it we would be UNC Charlotte for a long time.

Also any name change - formal or not is going to take time. UNCC and UNC Charlotte is in too many people’s lexicon to just stop using it. Then we have another group of people that basically no matter what we do they are going to try to cut us down and for them no matter what anyone says they will use what ever name they feel demeans us the most.

Unfortunately, we will never know. We don’t know going forward how it might affect the state level either. That’s all speculation. The Board of Governors changes over every 2 years. Who’s going to be on the board 10, 15, 20 years from now most likely will be completely different than who’s on it today.

What a stupid twit. “College towns don’t count.” What kind of dumb ass logic is that?

Her approach is not the best, but I think if you read carefully she actually agrees with us. She thinks it should just be “University of Charlotte”. Be kind. Use it as an opportunity to endear others to our cause.

Agreed. She’s not being mean or bitter about it. She’s showing the genuine confusion that’s been discussed.

Pitt, Syracuse, Stanford, wake forest, university of Chicago those are off the top of my head but there are soo many more

Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, Miami etc…
