First winning record in February since Lutz days. Happy that we’re back on the track to playing well late in the season. I know this season is not over, but I am pumped for next season!

I was impressed with our ball movement in this game.

I am also very proud that we are winning late in the season for the first time in ??? ? With that being said, this is still a team that lost to Campbell and then FAU which are both in the sub 300 rpi range. Our Kenpom rating is currently 200, but our RPI is like 240something. Those ratings don’t lie.

I am very proud, but don’t count me in the crowd of “we need just 1 more piece and we could make the tournament next year.” Our defense is still atrocious and we need quality front court players. This is by no means a criticism, as this team has outpaced my expectations.

Even just mediocre defense and we have a winning record this season. Fortunately, we’ll have more size and athleticism next year. Price, the Clemson transfer, and the freshman forward all have more length than our current guys, which should help us out defensively (I hope so anyway).

We really need a defense minded big man though. With the way we move the ball around, I don’t know that we need an offensive stud inside because we should be able to get him relatively easy looks around the basket, but it is vital that we have someone that can shut down the space around the basket. We let teams drive on us at will and it hasn’t gotten much better, if at all, all season.

I will be curious to see if we pick up another big man 5th year senior transfer like Uchebo. They are out there, and based on this year we could not have a better story to tell on the recruiting trail. It would fill a gap while Price has a chance to find a freshman to take that slot. I do not think anyone comes in and puts up numbers like Big Joe, but if they are more athletic around the rim it should all balance out.

Maybe Mike Thorne can get a hardship waiver and come back for a 6th year with us.

If you want to play meaningful games in March you absolutely have to close seasons strong. We haven’t done that in far too long. Considering this is a team of mostly new kids it is even more impressive.

But we’ve already added several pieces (Ajukwa, Garvin, Jackson, Price, Bergang). One would think that our defense will improve as we currently have been playing with 4 6’ 3" gaurds, and one extremely immobile big man. There are mismatches everywhere, but lately we have been coming out on top in most of our games. With the size on the wing coming in next year (and if we can add a big man or two) we could be really dangerous. Not sure how we could add scholarships. My guess would be one transfer, and price walks on. I think we are a lot closer than you may think.

Maybe not, but I think we all thought Joe would average 3-4 points and 5-6 boards a game (in limited minutes) as well. :-\

Does anyone have a clue why Camidge hasn’t played the last two games, and only 3 minutes against WKU. His body language was bad both home games during timeouts and pre-game.

No argument there, but they also need rest and he can play a few minutes. I just didn’t know if he was being punished or if he is also planning to transfer to Wilmington.

I think he may be one of the transfers.

Is that just a guess or has there been rumors of players going to Wilmington

Because Wilmington is actually decent. He’s not getting anymore playing time there. He’s a D2 player

He is about the only player on the team that still looks to take a shot even when he is not open and someone else is. The net result is poor shot selections and missed shots. If he wants to be a star, App State or Johnson-and-Wales may have an open spot.

has some skills. has nba range on the three but not a good ball handler or defensive player. not a high iq basketball player and is never really in the flow of the game.

while our defense is not good, we are not the same team that lost to campbell. i really believe we are one team away from making the tournament, if for no other reason, than no team in cusa should have anywhere near the talent that we will have next season, in addition to the great coaching and year of experience for the freshmen.

It is worth noting that the improved look is coming against mostly really bad teams. We’ve only beaten 3 teams expected to be top 200 in rpi, Furman (175), Marshall (124), Western Kentucky (185). Thanks to CUSA’s overall weakness (22nd best conference in rpi, wow is that bad…), we’ve only played one team better than 100 rpi since the new year, UAB. So you have to consider that this later season improvement is in part due to a weaker schedule (I’d argue our weakest ever by far), with the quality of wins being at best only slightly better than what we had earlier in the season.

What’s probably more encouraging to me is that the mediocre teams aren’t just handling us like earlier in the season, no blowouts, and we just kind of look better. But I’m still not sure what to think about the future and the lack of improvement on D (considering the quality of opponents) is concerning to me.
