I donāt think anyone is necessarily. But I thought it was more money to get him to leave his long time school and with what he potentially could have gotten elsewhere. Seemed like coaches winning in lower conference get paid $$$ by the rich teams.
On the money front, could we have gotten Petrino if we were in the $1.5mm range (prob not)? Can quality assistants with recruiting ties be hired with whatever assistant budget there is? Where does this salary put us in AAC land?
So it is only a game of what if, but what if Coach Albin went to his AD and requested a raise. Last year he got an extension until 2026 and he wanted some $$$ on top and a longer extension for this year. What if he was turned down. That changes the dynamics totally. With us he has 5 quaranteed years at close to 1M. That would be a million more over 5 years without waiting for someone else to call next year.
I read the Ohio board and there were hints that something like this may have happened. Of course, I have no idea but if it did and he was pissed off that could be a huge motivator for the change. Plus they like Lake Norman and were pretty familiar with the area. I can see it.
Also had use of the Ohio U golf course. BTW, Athens has a population of around 25,000. Just a bit smaller than the QC. And even Concord and Huntersville!
According to this article we are 12th in AAC just above Rice. We are probably lower since Tulane and Tulsa are private and the coaches salaries are not listed.
I dont think anyone is complaining that we appear to be getting a good deal with our new coach. Its just interesting in the college football world to leave a $700k HC job for $1MM HC job. Most people would leave for that type of raise, but also in this industry you see people hang on one more year to double or triple their salary rather than jumping for a shorter term pay bump.
Im not unhappy we appear to have gotten a deal, and I think Albin is probably a smarter guy than most of usā¦esp with industry things we attempt to only post on message boards about. I take it as a good sign that he wants to be here (at his age, maybe he sees this as a place to end his career and build something really special) and we really are an attractive job.
SW Ohio produced virtually no recruits, so at Ohio they had to recruit from all over the country, including other parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, and California, among other places. They also had several from Canada, one from Germany, and a couple of pacific islanders.
As far as salary, he stated that he did not feel respected by the Ohio AD. I know nothing about their interactions, so I will take him at his word that he was unhappy. I do think that if Albin wins at Charlotte, he should get raises, and probably will get them, so he will make more money in the end.
I think that the other thing that makes the Charlotte job attractive to him is the opportunity to build something at Charlotte, just as Solich built something at Ohio. Letās say that he coaches another ten years, and establishes a pattern of winning every year, and increasing support for the program every year. That will be something he can be proud of.
