Give Lutz the entire season. I would have for him to get an extension in January only to see our play fall in the Atlantic 10. Also I wouldnât want him gone after the first 10 games and then the program do well in the Atlantic 10, maybe win the conference (not likely but it could happen). I donât want this decision made in haste. It sucks that weâre in this position and you can debate rather Bobby put himself in this situation or itâs our fault for moving to the Atlantic 10. It is what it is and rather itâs been mishandled by us or not, this decision needs to be made at the end of the season.
Its more about wins or losses this year. Remember 2 years ago. The team won around 20 games and went to the NIT. But anyone who watched the team long enough knew something was really wrong with that group of guys. The decision has to be made off of team progression, cohesion, and if we are competitive or not. Our OOC schedule will give us plenty of chances to see if progress is made.
I agree. On the surface people would say that season was a success. Ask any of us that followed the team that year and we would all agree that team underachieved. Last year was terrible. If this year the team falls short again, then he shouldnât get an extension. I think 99% of us want to see Bobby do well and stay here, heâs gotta earn it due to the past two seasons.
My two cents:
Lutz had a nice resume built up a few years ago and tried to cash in. Canât fault him there. When he didnât get the UT job, I believe he has effectly spent the last couple of years going through the motions (I call it pouting, but letâs not get hung up on wording).
Now, after not getting extended and not being begged back after he flirted with South Ala, he knows itâs put up or shut up tiime.
The good news is that I think that he is working his butt off to get us back to the respectable state we were at a few years ago. Then he can get a better job a few years down the road. I hope heâs successful.
I want to see people put themselves in Judy's fro for a moment..
:lmao:
But is he set up for failure without an extension, or do you guys think we have enough with our current lineup plus Gerrity this spring and Bowden HOPEFULLY next fall? I know that canât be answered right now, but I guess that question becomes do they forgive Lutz for a wretched recruiting class because it was somewhat forced upon him?

Preach it, brother!
That year was a success from a W-L perspective I guessâŚbut what a disaster in terms of discipline, coaching, recruiting, etc. etc. This ship was sinking fast up until around the spring 2 years ago - when we stopped crying about Beasley, started hiring assts who had their s**t together, and signed recruits Phil Jones & David Booker in the last minute of the 11th hour of the signing period (Yes, Booker looked like a terrific late signee).
A few of us shared the view I had at the start of last year - hoping for the best but not really expecting much out of a âteamâ of individuals (note the word âteamâ in quotes). I though the coaches started to clean up a great big mess ⌠EJ (and JJ), for instance, looked like they were sold on the concept of accepting their parts assigned and playing their part to the best of their abilities. But the poor makeup of the team was just too much to overcome. It also didnât help that a couple players seemed to be off in their own little worlds. Even though the ship wasnât really sinking any more, we were accumulating losses due to all the past mistakes and most fans looked around and said âWHERE THE F**K DID ALL THIS WATER COME FROM!â
Iâm hoping this year is the opposite of last year - instead of lots of experienced transfers/poor team make-up - Iâd prefer having inexperience/team make-up with high potential. After seasons of bulls**t, is it too much to ask to have my freaking team playing like a well-oiled machine some day? Hell, if it takes a year then it takes a year. If it takes less⌠Hey! even better. But if we emerge victorious against HP and App with chuck-and-duck play vs. man-defense then weâve got a major problem with coachingâŚI donât care what the record says. If we look worlds better in February than we did after a lousy November then the coaches have done their jobsâŚI donât care what the record says.

Itâs only wretched if we panic and sign bozos.
We lose 5 players in the next 2 years: Lee, Phaler, Lewis, Coley, & Mack. So far, Bowden has lined up to take the schollie vacated by Lee. Worst case scenario is that Phaler and Lewis graduate and we have no scholarship player to replace them. But itâs not that unusual for a school to not use every scholarship (Charlotte usually has one open which is how we get transfers like Gerrity. Xavier seems to always start each season shorthanded).
That would leave 4 open scholarships for 2009. Thatâs pretty manageable, 'specially if Lutz is given a vote-of-confidence and an extension by then.
Yeah, I agree. Outside of Leemire, I donât think weâre losing anyone next year that is really going to hurt us to not have a replacement.
You will all find tomorrowâs Observer very interesting. Lutz story addresses many of the issues raised here, talks to principals in the story. Some questions answered, some still up in the air.

Whoâs the writer?
I have mixed emotions about this. On one hand I feel like we are doing our coach a huge disservice by trying to keep him here with the A10 and the location of Charlotte being in the middle of BB country dragging him down. But on the other hand, it would be good to extend him before the BCS guys realize what a mistake Tennessee made. I guess since heâs All In we should give him a multi year extension with the understanding that if someone else comes after him heâs All Gone.

Ron Green Jr., but does it matter?

YES
How will the story be different, in your opinion?

You tell us. You know your guys.
Itâs a fine story, some of which you wonât want to hear.
O.K. Mike, stop the âcat and mouseâ here. Like what? What do we not want
to hear? Weâll buy your paper anyway, but itâs not fair to drop little hints here.

Well, Poole has an attitude about us. Sorenson tends to write for shock value sometimes. Wertz (who I actually like) pimps for the ACC. Green is okay, more than just a little elitest in my opinion, but okay.
That said, Iâm looking forward to the article.
