Will Healy New Coach

I see no difference in talking about Healyā€™s potential to leave for a better gig and enjoying success. They go hand in hand. I would much rather have those types of discussions here rather than how much we have to pay to buy out a contract.

Austin Peay was a ā€œgarbageā€ job. Some people outside our fan base would have said Charlotte was, too. Healy could well look upon the lower part of P5 as a stepping stone to the upper part.
All that said, Iā€™m hoping you are right.

Fair point.

These guys are really just a bunch of softies that love us.

These comments are quite funny. Dogging their coach pretty bad and wishing they had Healy

Yea, letā€™s rewind the clock one year and see how many of these Herd fans would be condescending as shit about even interviewing an FCS coach with a sub 0.500 record.

To hell with them, Iā€™m glad we got Healy, heā€™s exactly what the Niners needed.

Another reason to extend him now and aggressively is because of the upcoming recruiting class. Prior to signing day there will be a lot of pitches trying to flip our commits about how Healy will be gone before they play 2 seasons here. An aggressive extension changes that narrative.

I think we need to bet the proverbial farm on Healy. We have one of the top G5 coaches, and we need to pay him as such. As much as we all complain about Judy, she left our Budget in darn good shape. If we have to go into debt to pay Healy now, we need to do it.

When you look at everything on the horizon for our program (Stadium Expansion, Conference realignment) I think an investment in Healy in the short term will pay in grand dividends in the long term. A healthy football program now will take our AD to places it has never been.

I have been around football all my life. My dad took me everywhere with him on recruiting visits all the way up to my current job. I have never seen anything like what Will Healy is doing. We need to do everything we can do to keep him as long as we can.

We arenā€™t even close to the big boy moneyā€¦ if a big boy wanted to throw out an offer. Is there a list of D1 salaries? That would be interesting to see. Iā€™m curious how many current teams pay $2mm and how many of those are looking for a coach.

If you take off your green glasses, how much of a raise do you give?

Heā€™s exceeded expectations already. Recruiting has picked up. Show him we are serious about keeping him and winning.

Againā€¦winning shminning.
Youā€™re paying Healy for what he can do marketing wise for the schoolā€™s ultimate goal of moving up conferences. The winning needs to be there too but what Healy brings to the equation is the media/exposure/hype that few can pull off.

If the goal is just winningā€¦pay him what we offered Houstonā€¦$1.1MM. He won 2 (maybe 3) more games and only has beaten 1 team with a winning record.

But if youā€™re paying him for everything else heā€™s doing:
-Local recruiting/relationship building
-Building a new culture
-Club Lit
-Local media relations
-Social media explosion/effectiveness
-National media hype
-And yesā€¦winning a few more games

Then you open the pocketbook and overpay for the extras because the end goal is not to just try to win a few more football games or have more over .500 seasons than under .500 seasonsā€¦

The goal (and Mike Hillā€™s goal) is to grab the attention of the Conferences in the NCAA that we aspire to jump to and make the jump.

Healy has the rare combination of looks/energy/character/charisma/leadership/inelligence/etc that can do more for us than just win football games and we need to take advantage of thatā€¦Here and now. No telling when another combination like him becomes available to us againā€¦if ever.

The timing is right . We can ride this Healy wave to the next Conference. If that is Mike Hillā€™s end goal, thereā€™s nobody better than Healyā€¦might not ever be againā€¦at least in Charlotte.

Thatā€™s why you open the checkbook and overpayā€¦until it hurts.

Are you Willā€™s brother-in-law?

I can see bumping him up around what we originally offered Houston (around 1 million per year IIRC) if we can increase the buyout significantly but in my opinion itā€™s too early to go all in. I like the way his contract is structured with bonuses for goals achieved but I can understand why some are worried about losing him if we donā€™t offer him more. This is probably not a popular opinion right now but if you go back 6 weeks who would have thought we should break the bank with a new contract. Winning the last 5 games was an amazing way to finish the season but if you throw out Marshall the other 4 teams had a combined record of 10 wins & 38 losses. And without Chris Reynolds we probably donā€™t win those games. Heā€™s definitely got us headed in the right direction but I donā€™t think we should sell the farm just because some dumbass at a P5 might potentially throw a ton of money at Healey. I feel like he will show loyalty to Mike Hill for at least a few years for taking a chance on him when no other BCS school would have but Iā€™m probably being naive. If a lower level P5 throws 1.5 or 2 million at him & heā€™s interested in just the money we canā€™t compete but I donā€™t get the feeling heā€™s that kind of person. I just canā€™t see an upper level P5 taking that chance on him this soon. Just my opinion.

Agree. But in any case, Will took a huge step when he agreed to ā€œwalk to Charlotteā€ for an interview. Gut: Heā€™ll be here for several seasons. Hope he evolves into ā€œCoach Hā€.

Againā€¦your logic is very soundā€¦if you are talking about football game wins only.

Step back and look what those wins combined with Healy being Healy has done to our profile regionally and nationally.

If Lambert kept this team and won 2 more games this year and we had the exact same record going to the exact same bowl we are no where near where we are in the eyes of the region/state/nationally as we are today with Healy.

Soā€¦Thatā€™s my point. If youā€™re paying him to win football games, pay him $1.1MM and if he leaves go find someone else that can win football games.

But if you need someone to hitch our ride to the next Conference toā€¦itā€™s Healy. Pay him for thatā€¦in addition to and moreso than his ability to win football games.

I agree with this sentiment. Heā€™s so much more than just a coach

He is nothing Iā€™ve ever seen before when it comes to marketing/media/exposure and exactly what Charlotte needs at the helm of the flagship sport in the NCAA. Is there any other coach anyone here has seen that can do what he has done with us marketing/media wise in such a short period of time??

We will never see another one like him in Green & Gold.

Soā€¦what are we gonna do with him while heā€™s here?

Our future needs more than just football game wins to get us where we want to go. I think we need to leverage the hell out of everything he is and can do for usā€¦before he leverages the hell out of us for his next gig.

Man, I wish some of you guys were my boss. I see no reason to litigate his contract here. Hill will take care of this.

I agree. Mike Hill is on it Iā€™m sureā€¦and I believe they are tight and are basically mirror images of each other (and I wish they could ride this train for the next 5-10years together to really see what they could do here).

But if this gets slow played from our end. In other words, the rumors donā€™t progressā€¦flight schedules arenā€™t tweetedā€¦ a hasty extension isnā€™t signedā€¦then Healy must really believe in what Hill is doing and where we are going and he wants to ride it out a little longer to see it come to fruition.

We could be a place he could build a legacy atā€¦but he would have to feel certain that we (Mike Hill) would do our part and move up to make it worth his while.

If we do not move upā€¦or if he doesnā€™t believe we will be moving upā€¦he almost has to go when his star is on the rise and Iā€™m not sure he could afford not to jump at the first big offer that comes his way. Like a lottery pick in basketball. Rodney White wasnā€™t ready but if you know youā€™re going in the lottery you have to jump. You stay and risk dropping and you never get that chance back maybe. Can Healy really get much hotter than he is right now?? He could certainly fall into oblivion over the next couple of years with a couple bad breaks and not meeting expectations here (which is now 7+ wins and a bowl, right?)

Soā€¦if this ends up all to do about nothing and he stays without even flirting with some offersā€¦that may tell us what he thinks or knows is coming via Mike Hill and our future Conference prospects.

How much?
