Will Lutz Leave?

Originally posted by mazzniner@Feb 2 2005, 11:56 AM if we go one and done again this year in the tournament, get rid of bobby and bring in Jay Bilas!!!!
Bilas would be great, but he probably makes more than Bobby already, and he doesn't have to beg 17 year olds to join him in Charlotte to do it.

Why would Bilas give up a great job that he has now?

Why is this thread getting so much play?

Has he resigned already?

-Bobby has not been discussed
-THey are trying to fill footbal positions (Def Asst should be announced today)
-Then they will turn attention to Herb
-Herb will most likely get one more year.

Ok, lets move on to beating the THUGCATS this weekend. This discussion is over. Can I get an amen?

Hey, I never claimed my conversation was with someone ā€œin the knowā€ :stuck_out_tongue: . I certainly don’t think Bobby would leave but thought it might be something we could discuss (and with 60+ replies and over 1100 views a lot of others seem to agree).

Johonny Dawkins would never come to Charlotte..period.

MY VOTE FOR THE NEXT COACH WOULD BE BOB McKILLOP AT DAVIDSON

Bobby has done well with the situation he’s been given at Charlotte. He’s done well with recruiting, not so well with Xs and Os. I think he’s a great person and done some really great things at Charlotte, but he’s just not going to be able to take us to the next level with the style he plays. That being said and considering our pending move, I don’t think anyone can take us to the next level in the A-10. That’s because the conference is a slight step down from CUSA. So, the issue becomes rather the Athletic Dept. has set up this situation and I think they have. But with the support our program has both financially and fan-wise, I think the A-10 is the best we could do. It’s a tough situation.

The ACC being in our region is the biggest obstacle we could ever face. We’ll never get them to play us and we’ll never get the big name recruits that want to go to the ACC, plus we’ll never get the recognition we deserve. But that being said, do we really deserve recognition for an upset per year and a first round NCAA crap out? Think about it. Sure, we aren’t stinking up the joint, but we aren’t pulling off Gonzaga runs every year either. I think a lot of folks here forget that the last Sweet 16 we’ve been to was in 1977. Reality is reality and I think given the money and opportunity, Lutz would be crazy not to go to the ACC if it came about. His options at Charlotte are just too limited and it’s not that big of a secret.

I didnt really wanna add to this thread, but oh well…

I’m not sure how hard State would pursue him, but its possible Bobby would leave if they came calling…I like Coach Lutz and think he’s a good fit for our program. That being said, we would be fine…Just like the last couple times we had a coach leave. I dont see any current assistants waiting in the wings to take our program over this time, but we would find somebody, an up and commer who wants to prove themselves at an established, winning program.

But, ultimately, I’d like to see Lutz coach here until he retires and finishes building a special program. I do, however, reserve the right to criticize Lutz at any time I feel appropriate :stuck_out_tongue: He’s not perfect, but the best option we have at this point IMHO.

Oh, one more thing…lets just whoop some bearcat ass this weekend and worry about everything else later

I've posted here before that Bilas would be my #1 choice as a replacement. Even though he's a Duke alum, that's a formula that has worked for us in the past. Bilas could recruit easily due to his exposure on ESPN.

I don’t think Bilas would ever coach college for the $, he’d do it for the challenge. There a few people involved in college bball as bright as he is and he’s always been a supporter of Charlotte bball.

Heck…I think I’d take Bilas over Coach K.

ninermike…please stay off the narcotics

Just in. ESPN.com: Lutz’s name is being mentioned in association with the soon to be vacant Lakers job. :o

Ok, that’s my last post on this subject…at least until after we make a sweet 16 run.

That would be funny if we got traded coaches with State. Well, not for us because we would definitely be on the short end of that deal, but good replacements might be

Bilas,
Eustachy(So. Miss, Iowa St.)
Rick Majerus
Gillen
McKillop

I thinkBobby is the best option though, so hopefully state can get someone higher profile so we can keep him.

And hopefully for state fans sake, they kick herb to the curb

The only thing this discussion has done is give Packer more fuel for the fire. I just spoke with a close friend who supports State. He says Bobby is NOT on their list.

Hmmm, ya know, that reminds me that I thought I heard Lutz' name mentioned by Isiah Thomas during his press conference last week about the Knicks. Maybe if the Lakers doesn't work, he could go to the Big Apple.

I wouldn't want any of those except Bilas.

Eustachy is a drunk
Majerus is fickle
Gillen is AWFUL
McKillop is too old.

If Bobby did ever leave my choice would be someone like Jeff Caple or Mick Cronin. Mike Jarvis would be good as well I think.

McKillop isn’t THAT old, is he?

How about that guy that was at Queens and is now at High Point? And not that I’m suggesting this person, but what is Larry Shyatt up to nowadays?

McKillop won’t leave Davidson because he wouldn’t be able to recruit the foreign players he gets now anywhere else. He’s a great coach though. Bart Lundy, now at High Point, hasn’t done much this season with the Panthers. They’ve struggled in a bunch of close games, mostly coming out on the short end. He’s an up & comer but it won’t be at Charlotte (yet).

Orlando Early. It is all about getting the talent. Early is a top notch recruiter. If you land the talent then the system does not matter as much.

I hope Coach Lutz coaches here till he retires.

McKillop’s teams are always so fundamentally sound. Even the US players. I don’t know how well he’d recruit here, but there must be alot more resources at Charlotte. Davidson is a rich school, but only has 1,700 students. I’ve always admired the guy. He’s able to schedule big programs, also.

How about Greg Marshall from Winthrop? Has some good teams. Want Bobby to stay at Charlotte, but if he leaves for something he wants badly, I’ll be happy for him.
